BANJI release glitchy indie-pop single ‘Listen’ via [PIAS] Recordings

Netherlands 4-piece Banji release chaotic, hyperactive single ‘Listen’ out now via [PIAS] Recordings.

Channelling the chameleonic indie stylings of BeckThe Dandy Warhols or Darwin Deez in matching spiky guitars with 8-bit bleeps and sardonic lyrics, ‘Listen’ is a punchy opening gambit from the group. Immediate in its technicolour appeal, and long lasting in its infectious impression, it’s a song that’ll be rattling around your ears for days after listening.

It’s accompanied by a video, created by Pasqual Amade, that expresses the band perfectly – encapsulating the line they perfectly tread between bratty and endearing, replete with food fights and family arguments around the TV.

The busyness in the video reflects both the production style of the track, as well as the themes. As the band elaborate:

“The instrumental to this track felt very lively and energetic. There are a lot of little elements hidden in the music, almost as if they’re constantly trying to talk through each other. I took that concept and pictured a couple sitting at a dinner table. ‘Listen’ ended up being a song about favouring child-like stubbornness over maturity. The inability to filter thoughts, and instead, trying to talk your way out. It’s basically me saying to myself ‘things would be a lot easier if you just listened’”.

An explosive pop hit- exuding power, angular instrumentation and melody. Vibrant and at it’s core- fun!

This final line hinting at self-awareness amongst the disorder – before a more literal admission:

“It’s also the first song we finished, and felt like a good introduction to the band, asking people to listen.”

The quartet have already started turning heads in their native Netherlands, with an after show set for Vampire Weekend and support slot with Belgian icons Balthazar under their belts.

There’s pedigree in the recording team, the track being a co-production between the band and Jeroen De Pessemier (Oscar and the Wolf) at ICP Studios in Brussels, where The Cure and The Vaccines have recorded, and mixed by Mucky, who has worked with Sevdaliza

A creative relationship with LA based artist Zack Rosebrugh has created a defined graphical style to populate the colourful world they’re generating too, with all aspect pulling together to form a welcoming invitation.
