Palace Winter
announce UK tour and release a trippy music video
for lead single “Top of the Hill”
from their upcoming album …Keep Dreaming, Buddy
out 23rd October on Tambourhinoceros

Palace Winter unveil the video for their single “Top of the Hill” and announce a UK tour for 2021.

“Top of the Hill (feat. Lowly)”, along with much of Palace Winter’s forthcoming album …Keep Dreaming, Buddy, was written through a long distance correspondence while lead singer/songwriter Carl Coleman was living in Tenerife last winter and Caspar Hesselager was in the band’s hometown of Copenhagen. “Caspar was sending me these synth hooks and drum loops from Denmark, so I started coming up with melodies and lyrical ideas to record into my phone” says Coleman.

Though the song’s lyrics evoke images of Tenerife, “Top of the Hill” is a tale of two cities. The music video juxtaposes scenes from Copenhagen with the lyrics’ scenes from Tenerife which hint at Hesselager’s experience of listening through Coleman’s demos – laden with volcanic imagery – while walking through Copenhagen’s parks.

The video takes us on a trippy walk around the city with actress Carla Viola Thurøe, her gaze shifting between crystal balls, and visually-trailed flowers, inspecting their texture. We can picture Hesselager doing the same last year, turning the song’s unfinished beats around in his head, and contemplating Coleman’s phone recordings.

“Top of the Hill” is a statement of intent from a band who have written a collection of their most exciting and ambitious songs to date. Whilst keeping their widescreen, pop sensibilities, Coleman and Hesselager wanted to broaden their horizons on the new record, exploring hip-hop beats, 70s soul, 80s electronics and 90s guitars. Despite being a melting pot of these styles “Top Of The Hill” still sounds very Palace Winter: the band’s cinematic ambition and intricate production at centre stage, led by booming synth melodies and Coleman’s recognisable, bittersweet vocals, partnered with ghostly harmonies from Soffie Viemose, singer of Bella Union-signed experimental pop group Lowly. Thematically, Coleman describes the single as being “essentially the centrepiece of the whole record”.

Palace Winter will be on tour in the UK in March 2021:
