Composer John Bence signs to Thrill Jockey

Bence’s visceral magnum opus Kill, first released on Yves Tumor’s Grooming label, will be reissued via Thrill Jockey on July 10th with a new album scheduled for the fall

Thrill Jockey is proud to announce our latest signing: British composer John Bence.Over just a handful of releases including those for Nicholas Jaar’sOther People imprint and Yves Tumor’sGrooming label, Bence has built up a striking body of work, utilising music-making practices that span centuries in order to probe the full spectrum of the human psyche, its tragedies, ecstasies and all posts between. Thrill Jockey will be reissuing Bence’s visceral composition Kill on July 10th, with a new album scheduled for the fall. Written during a residency at Zaragoza’s FUGA space and originally released on GroomingKill was hailed by Boomkat as “quite unlike anything else we heard in 2018”. It unfurls as a captivating and unnerving three-part suite, which, as Bence explains, “tells the story of a murderer who kills his lover, commits suicide and then accelerates towards God to be judged“. Throughout Bence sings like a man possessed, shifting from aching operatic vocals and Gregorian chant to chilling screams, with symphonic instrumentation pounding, swelling and resolving into transfigurative calm behind him.

The raw emotional power of Bence’s live shows have seen him already invited to tour with artists including Grouper and Xiu Xiu, as well as performing at CTM, Atonal and Skanu Mezs festivals amongst others.
