Brad Stank shares new track “Breathing Like a Baby” ft. Ryshon Jones
From upcoming debut album out 5th June on Heist or Hit
Having announced his debut album Kinky Om to be released via Heist or Hit (Her’s, Pizzagirl, Guest Singer) on the 5th of June, Sexistentialist pop libertine Brad Stank today shares second single, “Breathing Like a Baby” featuring Ryshon Jones.
“Breathing Like a Baby” captures Brad finding his centre through the spirit guide of creativity, allowing him to process events and massage the pain following the loss of close friends. After a long period of self-imposed exile; meditating like a guru in the dojo of soul, the single follows its predecessor “Kinky Visitation” as typical of Brad’s upcoming reflective and most complete body of work to date.
“Breathing Like a Baby” was inspired after reading Wake Up by Jack Kerouac, a re-telling of the story of the Buddha; “He describes the stillness and innocence of young Siddhartha meditating as “breathing like a baby” says Brad. “I just liked the sound of that phrase and I decided to steal it!”
The track samples Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti who addresses how humans have created God through worship and thought, as Brad explains: “the better part of you IS God, he says, which has been my stance on spirituality for a while.”
He continues; “Krishnamurti’s had a big influence on my state of mind during the writing and recording of the album, so I wanted to pay tribute to him by sampling one of my favourite quotes in the song.”
Featuring Ryshon Jones’, the Philly rapper reached out after hearing one of his earliest tracks “O.T.D” and the pair found they had much in common: “I acquired the insight of Ryshon, whose voice seemed to fit perfectly with the track sonically. His first line is “the centre is the place,” which hit the nail on the head of what I was trying to say.”
The upcoming album Kinky Om sees Brad team up with producer Saam Jafarzadeh (Her’s) for a vibe of future nostalgia paying homage to pioneers such as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and D’Angelo.
His previous bedroom-recorded blend of lounge lizard jazz and smoky blues won him fans at i-D, Complex, NTS, Clash, Pitchfork’s So Good playlist, support slots with Clairo, Gus Dapperton, Her’s, The Orielles and the UK’s most trusted ears in Huw Stephens at Radio 1, and Lauren Laverne and Tom Ravenscroft at BBC 6.
On early evidence, Brad Stank once again proves we can always rely on his music for solace and with his new single he’s “finding balance and perspective in a world that can feel extreme in many ways.”
Brad Stank’s debut album Kinky Om will be released by Heist or Hit on June 5th, new single “Breathing Like a Baby” is out now.
