Brighton quartet Beachtape release sunny slacker-rock EP ‘Bigger Picture’,out via what marbles? today
Brighton slacker-rock quartet Beachtape release invigorating new EP ‘Bigger Picture’ on April 10th via what marbles?.
Pre-release singles, the sunny, contemplative ‘Somewhere Better’ and resigned, lackadaisical ‘Somebody Like Hugh’ are joined by the country-inflected ‘Loose Ends’, a millennial counterpart to Pavement’s iconic ‘Range Life’ for 2020, and the off-kilter ‘Think Like You’, which dials up the weirdness.
Across the EP the four-piece occupy a similar space to Happyness, (sandy) Alex G or Willie J Healey in their recourse to the stilted, slacker-Americana of Wilco and Dinosaur Jr, with a distinct beach-pop sheen adopted from their Brighton base. Their songs cover the fuzz of early-20s anxiety, a transitional phase of life, with peaks and troughs dictated by paradoxical instants of motivation and listlessness.
They elaborate: “These songs are inspired by our day to day lives, monotonous ways, relationships and the changes entailed. The EP was written and recorded over a few months where a lot changed. Bigger Picture represents our outlook on moving forward from a weird time for us. Coincidentally into the even weirder time we are living in now with what’s going in the world.”
With champions at the likes of The Independent, Consequence of Sound, DIY, Clash and The Line of Best Fit at press, as well as live shows with YOWL, Bloody Knees and Egyptian Blue they’re making a name for themselves as a vital act in the indie scene.
This acclaim had led to them being selected for the doomed SXSW 2020 showcase, highlighting their potential to break out. Linking up with Cannibal Hymns artist Theo Verney for production duties too, there’s an exciting pedigree to the quartet all-in.
Beachtape are Rory Sear (Vocals, guitar), Robbie Carman (Guitar), Andy Kemp (Bass) and Leo Kenyon (Drums).
The ‘Bigger Picture’ EP was produced by Theo Verney and is out April 10th via what marbles? under exclusive license to CRC Records.
