Eliza Shaddad Releases New EP Sept ~ Dec

Formidable songstress Eliza Shaddad kicks off 2020 with the release of her powerfully poignant EP, Sept ~ Dec, released 24th January 2020 and available now.

The EP deals with different forms of withdrawal and isolation. Written in tandem with Eliza’s debut album Future – but set apart – the songs focus on new and different people in her life, dealing with sex, normalcy, friendship, and craving connections. Throughout the EP, Eliza’s trademark honesty is at the forefront, allowing the listener to feel seen and entirely encapsulated by Eliza’s powerful vulnerability. Opening with the fuzz-filled single One Last Embrace, Eliza takes no prisoners as she combines alternative rock, indie and grunge-infused soundscapes to create something deeply compelling. Following track Same As You – written in an abandoned flight simulation building on an old airbase in Suffolk – and previous single Girls combine chiming dream-pop with shimmering indie-rock sensibilities to create a sound that is both tantalisingly nostalgic and assertively contemporary. Eliza’s soft, breathy vocals reminiscent of the likes of Julia Jacklin and Marika Hackman.

Recorded in the front room of a bungalow in the wilds of Cornwall, the EP is a snapshot of the last few months of self-imposed isolation for Eliza, working with co-producer BJ Jackson to test the limits of an improvised, highly DIY studio, keeping all instrumentation extremely lo-fi. Eliza elaborates, “I wanted to be able to record at whim and capture the feelings and moods of these songs right in the moment, so we set up loads of gear and basically lived around it, refining and recording and refining. We kept crazy hours and got cabin fever most days, and then went and jumped in the sea and came back to work”.

Equally at home perusing murder ballads and decoding Arabic scales, Eliza’s singular artistry is the product of an incredibly diverse and borderless upbringing. Raised across seven countries, she is the daughter of a Sudanese astrophysicist and a Scottish diplomat. A multi-linguist with a philosophy degree, Eliza studied Jazz at London’s Guildhall before self-producing her first EP, recorded at the studio of Clean Bandit’s Jack Patterson. She then signed to UK label Beatnik Creative and released two critically acclaimed EPs, working with Mercury-nominated long time collaborator Chris Bond. Championed by tastemakers such as Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Radio X’s John Kennedy and supported by the likes of Wonderland, i-D Magazine and FADER, the EPs set the stage for an artist thriving on producing work abundant in sincerity and empowerment.

Eliza released her debut album Future in 2018, receiving praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, MOJO, Refinery29 and The Sunday Times. Previous singles Girls and One Last Embrace, taken from the upcoming EP, have also received praise from NOTION, The Independent, The Line of Best Fit and Clash to name a few. She has also previously been included in the likes of Spotify’s New Music Friday, Alternative Generation and Indie Radar playlists. Named a Rising Star of 2019 by the BBC, her reputation for powerful live shows has seen her touring extensively, playing dates with the likes of Kate Tempest, Oh Wonder, Lucy Rose, James Bay, and Turin Brakes. She has also collaborated with award-winning poet Anthony Anaxagorou and contemporary jazz group Hansu-Tori and is a founding member of seven-year-strong female arts collective Girls Girls Girls, which works to empower women within the arts, and to raise awareness and funding for the anti-female genital mutilation charity Orchid Project. Eliza is also endorsed by Gordon Smith Guitars
