Rad Releases 19 – Ynys

December 26, 2019

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2019 rapidly approaches and we somehow end this decade- we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year filled with plenty of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have once again pulled a lot of people through the year.

Now in it’s 9th year, we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their most loved events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Back in April we first introduced our readers to the talents of Ynys. Ynys, the new project by Dylan Hughes, former member of Race Horses, and this artist is one of the most exciting sounds breaking out of a rejuvenated and confident Welsh music scene. With a full-on year under his belt including some standout single releases via Libertino Records and a string of tour dates done- we chat to Dylan to find out more about his year in music and plans for the next year….

  • Top 5 releases of the year

Boy Azooga – Silly Me (single)

Latest single from Boy Azooga. I just love the melodies, the guitar, the chord changes and Dave’s voice on this track – heartbreakingly wonderful.  Looking forward to hearing the new album next year.

Bitw – Bitw (album)

This is a brilliant bilingual (Welsh/English) record by Bitw released on Joyful Noise Recordings. It’s surreal, it’s catchy, it’s wired pop at it’s best – ‘With You’ is a particular highlight. We did a short  UK tour with them in October and the songs sounded great live.

Keys – Bring me the head of Jerry Garcia (album)

This was released in November and it captures the band live amazingly. It’s raw psych rock record with copious reverb – can’t wait to see them play this live.

Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising (album)

I saw Weyes Blood supporting Father John Misty in Cardiff a couple of years ago and I’ve fallen hard for this album. The production/sound is very Carpenters meets George Harrison, the melancholic melodies and unsuspecting chord changes are just beautiful.

Michael Kiwanuka – Kiwanuka (album)

Released quite recently – Another artist I’d love to see live.

  • The best show you have played this year

Maybe, Hub festival August 2019 (Clwb Ifor Bach Cardiff). Not sure why, it was just a lovely gig downstairs in Clwb, and Womanby St in Cardiff had a street party feel, the weather was nice too.

* The best gig you have attended

I haven’t attended a lot this year. I’d say…MR at Clwb Ifor Bach Cardiff. MR is the solo work of Mark Roberts (formerly of Y Cyrff, Catatonia, The Earth). It was great to hear ‘Y Pwysau‘ (translation ‘the weight’) live, it’s one of the best Welsh language songs of the past 15 years.

  • Highlights of your year
  1. We played a live session for Marc Riley Session in August, which was cool but equally nerve wracking.
  2. Touring with Bitw & Sybs in October was great fun and reminded me that playing live is….fun,
  3. Releasing 2 singles on Libertino Records
  • Artist/Band to watch for 2020

Sybs – band from Cardiff. Their debut single ‘paid gofyn pam’ (don’t ask why) has been on heavy rotation with me, and is such a effortlessly cool tune. Looking forward to more releases in 2020 hopefully.

  • Best discovery this year

Fwrnes Pizzas ( Cardiff Market )

  • Plans for the New Year

Recording in January but in the meantime, trying to finish the lyrics to about 4 songs – seems to take forever!

Thanks so much Ynys, looking forward to more from you in 2020!
