Rad Releases 19 – Community Records

December 26, 2019

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2019 rapidly approaches and we somehow end this decade- we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year filled with plenty of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have once again pulled a lot of people through the year.

Now in it’s 9th year, we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their most loved events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Next up for our take-over, we had to ask the wonderful Community Records to contribute for another year.  The DIY label based in New Orleans, Louisiana- pride themselves on delivering the best in underground punk, reggae, hardcore, ska, experimental, noise etc. Community Records try to create something different, something positive, inclusive, beautiful, inspiring and something reflecting quality. We LOVE this label, their ethos and their artists- they are home to some of the most talented acts around and are always ready to promote another act that needs your attention. We hand over to Greg of Community Recs to find out more about his year in music…..

OUR 5 RELEASES THIS YEAR

Since we released 5 albums this year, we will start by listing the albums we released in order that we released them:

1) All People – Do This Again Tomorrow

2) Matt Surfin’ & Friends – S/T

3) Slingshot Dakota – Heavy Banding

4) King of Heck – Shine In My Chest

5) Hikes – Mahal Kita

(Listen to the records over at Bandcamp

All of these releases we love for different reasons. The one that is most personal, is certainly the release for All People in that D-Ray and I who run the label both play in that band, and the album is a document as to an end of a long and important chapter in our lives.

The lyrics from our song “Shattered Symbol” kind of say it best: “Don’t forget your promise, Don’t forget to slow down, We’ve always been the ones to make summer last. This is a testament to what we become, another document to how far we’ve come, Shattered symbol. Broken glass.”

For 2020 the biggest things we have planned are shows at SXSW in Austin, Texas & a full length LP release for NOVA ONE. We are incredibly excited about both. One of the most exciting things we did this year was a performance at Hey! Cafe. We got to play as the backing band for Matt Embree (of Rx Bandits & The Sound of Animals Fighting) the show was incredible start to finish, and brought out a ton of friends. The energy in the room was positive and bouncing off the walls. Matt Embree released a solo record this year called “2019” that is a really well put together album.

Thank you so much, what an incredible year under your belt. We are so excited to hear more from the label in the new year…
