Rad Releases 19 – Body Hound

December 26, 2019

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2019 rapidly approaches and we somehow end this decade- we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year filled with plenty of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have once again pulled a lot of people through the year.

Now in it’s 9th year, we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their most loved events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take-over comes from the instrumental progressive rock 4 piece Body Hound. Where the band began as a two-piece sounding like a more groove-laden version of The Locust, consisting of Ryan Bright (Drums, Redmist Destruction, Tim Butane) and Calvin Rhodes (Guitar, formerly Antares). This line-up was completed by the addition of Joseph Thorpe on Bass (Zozo, formerly Rolo Tomassi, Doctrines, Then Thickens) and Joe Nicholson on Guitar (formerly Rolo Tomassi). Together the 4 create full-bodied epic orchestrations, sounding like a band double it’s size and lacking absolutely nothing. The musicians each bring unmistakable energy and ferocity to this act. The band have had a mighty year with the release of their new album No Moon which was catastrophically huge on all levels. We handover to the band to find out more about their year in music…..

  • Top 5 releases of the year

JT: My bandmate and probably the worst-smelling man I know Joe Nicholson (guitar, rectal steez) submitted the following records as his favourite releases this year. He didn’t tell me why he likes them so I’ll provide reasons on his behalf.

Lapalux – Amniorverse

“Lapalux is the sickest filter on Instagram and the best way to showcase my selfies to my followers. I make £50k a year and I don’t have time to do anything that’s not skiing.”

Town Portal – Of Violence

“A glistening diamond of an album. Listening to it in low lighting and low trousers is particularly eyebrows eyebrows eyebrows.”

FKA Twigs- Magdalene

“Wholly ingenius and moving, this record mostly rrrRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRrRrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRrrrrrrr 10/10.”

Djrum – Portrait With Firewood

“A comprehensive yet easy-to-follow guide on how to make you own fifty foot portrait out of fire. Honestly, the results have been nothing short of something from The Wicker Man.”

My own contribution to this list is: Leg by Beige Palace. It’s very good and nearly as funny as the album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino by Arctic Monkeys.

  • The best show you have played this year

Our album release show at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, for obvious reasons.

  • The best gig you have attended

Town Portal @ JT Soar, Nottingham. This was only our second gig with them on that tour. I sat in front of Christian (Henrik Ankerstjerne, guitar) and thought ‘fuckin’ hell, m8′ and then realised that not only were they making fascinating and emotional rock music but also that there was an air of Drive Like Jehu to what they were doing, which I like. After the gig I asked him if he was into that band and he said “yes”.

  • Highlights of your year

The other day I had a charcoal base pizza for the first time and can confidently tell you about extremely satanic black tar.Releasing No Moon and so many folks digging it.Living off the unfathomable wealth that comes with self-releasing an album of Progressive Rock close to an hour in length.

  • Artist/Band to watch for 2020

I’m particularly excited to see what the band Heads do next. Their album Collider came out last year and I haven’t been able to leave it alone.

  • Best discovery this year

Some Other Time by The Alan Parsons project. Name a more stately melody. Go on. Coward. The Charcoal Base Pizza from Leeds, who released an utterly delicious (sadly already out of print) 12″ just this week.

  • Plans for the New Year

This New Years Eve myself and Calvin (Rhodes, guitar) will be playing shite at a popular British holiday park and then hot-footing by car it back to Yorkshire for Buckfast and Scooter and awful reflection. The band Body Hound will play some gigs. I might get another one of them charcoal base pizzas.

Thank you Body Hound! Still can’t get over how insane your album release was! Looking forward to hearing more from you in 2020…
