It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2019 rapidly approaches and we somehow end this decade- we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year filled with plenty of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have once again pulled a lot of people through the year.
Now in it’s 9th year, we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their most loved events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.
Our next Rad Releases take-over comes from the Swiss 4-piece Annie Taylor. This band have had a brilliant year in music, we’ve followed this outfit and shared news of their new releases unveiled in the last 12 months. Back in April the quartet released their new EP Not Yours! via Taxi Gauche Records. Annie Taylor are masters of curating intricately infectious grunge rock with a twist. We speak to Gini, vocalist/guitarist and Jan, bassist to find out about their favourite releases of the year and their 2020 plans….
Top 5 releases of the year
Gini: I think I have to go with Marika Hackman‘s new album. I was so into her last albums, so I thought it would be hard to top it, but know I know better. Her new album gets me a bit melancholic and fragile. I love the voices especially in “All Night”. It’s very touching and in general, I think
it’s my number one on my “last play-playlist” on Spotify.
Jan: For me, some of the hottest releases this year is the new Kadavar album – For the Dead Travel Fast, especially the songs “The Devil’s Master” and “Evil Forces.” I like the mood, drive, and energy. The drums of Tiger Bartelt get me going!
Besides that, King Gizzard released that super thrashy album, where, in my opinion, they touch on topics that are important to me. But it is not only the topic of the songs and the sound; KGATLW impresses me with their ability to play tunes that differ from their earlier releases. They are such excellent musicians.
We are all very much in love with “Pretty Groovy” by Faux Ferocious. If you have the chance to see them live- go!
Gini: New personal discovery: Elena Tonra’s solo project Ex:RE! Too good to be true.
• The best show you have played
That’s hard! The whole year were very blessed with our audience and the kind of venues we were able to play. We got a lot of powerful energy from the shows and received the venue hosts as very gentle and generous people. Also a dream came true, when we got to play with FEWS and Sugar Candy Mountains, who are both bands that we really enjoy listening to. So it’s hard to decide! But I think our favourite show was either our sold out EP release show in April or the first Taxi Gauche Label Night at Stall 6 in November.
• The best gig you have attended
Gini: In Switzerland we are very lucky, when it comes to live music. A lot of amazing artists are stopping by and it makes it easy to attend a lot of shows. Hard to tell which one was “THE BEST”, but there is one, which was at least very special to me: We just finished recording in October and the whole band went to a Moon Duo show in Zurich. Since we were intensely recording the whole week, we felt tired and actually totally oversaturated in every sense! The show was sold out, and at the moment we arrived, they started to play one of my favourite songs. From this moment I was soaked into another universe and swiped away by the beat in combination with an amazing visual and light show!
Jan: I totally agree! Additionally, I really enjoyed the show of Ron Gallo, earlier this year. This guy brings across such a cool vibe and positive energy.
Gini: Also, as I already mentioned before, I had a really good time at the Faux Ferocious gig in Zurich at the end of summer. their music has so much power and is “pretty Groovy”!
• Highlights of your year
There were a bunch of highlights! We had some new singles released in early 2019 and it was a great pleasure to be working with the video director Dominic Foster (who was also working with The Coral, Stereolab and more). Shortly after there was our debut EP release, which we pressed on orange vinyl. It feels great to finally have a physical release! We are having a lot of fun playing live and were very happy, that we were able to play some really cool festivals and venues this year!
• Plans for the New Year
We are more than excited to announce our first album in early 2020! This fall we spent some time at Dala Studios with David Langhard (producer of psychedelic titans Klaus Johann Grobe) and recorded the first tracks out our upcoming debut album. Besides that, we are getting ready for touring the US! This is gonna be a great adventure!
Thanks so much both, pleasure to have you take on the site and share about your year in music. We are looking forward to what the next year brings for Annie Taylor.
