UNCUT GEMS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK OUT NOW ON WARP RECORDS
THE FILM STARS ADAM SANDLER AND IS BEING RELEASED BY A24FOLLOWS GOOD TIME OST, WINNER OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACK AWARD CANNES 2017
Daniel Lopatin’s soundtrack for Josh and Benny Safdie‘s latest film, Uncut Gems, is out now on Warp Records, coinciding with the release of the film in select U.S. theaters by A24 following hosted premieres in Daniel’s hometown of Boston, Los Angeles, and Atlanta (hosted by Metro Boomin).
This week, Daniel and the directors appeared in a talk hosted by The Weeknd’s HXOUSE from the Toronto International Film Festival and Moog Music interviewed Lopatin and Josh Safdie for an upcoming “Behind The Soundtrack” documentary.
Uncut Gems will be available nationwide in U.S. theaters on December 25th. The film stars Adam Sandler, NBA Champion Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, and Julia Fox, and has screened to rapturous response from critics and audiences at the Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, winning awards from New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review as well as various other nominations so far. The hypnotic crime thriller follows Sandler’s Howard Ratner, a charismatic jeweller always on the lookout for the next big score, on a twisted odyssey in pursuit of the windfall of a lifetime (watch the trailer here).
Lopatin’s score accompanies the action in Uncut Gems perfectly, a soundtrack just as thrilling as the film itself. Uncut Gems has received wide acclamation thus far–the New York Post called it “the best movie of Adam Sandler’s career,” and Sandler himself threatened retaliation (in the form of a third Grown Ups movie) if his performance does not win an Oscar for Best Actor. In addition to the praise for the film itself, the soundtrack has received rave recognition from the likes of Vanity Fair, IndieWire and Thrillist.
The Uncut Gems soundtrack is the second Safdie brothers movie scored by Lopatin, following 2017’s Good Time, for which he received the Best Soundtrack Award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Daniel Lopatin and the Safdie brothers have developed a close partnership through their shared love of cult films and music.
Lopatin recently was interviewed by Variety: “The composer believes that ‘real filmmaking is every department having as much heart, as much soulful connectivity as possible, to the ideas that are firmly in place in the movie. When we do that, the result is what you hear. That’s our style. We certainly had the luxury of having so much freedom.”
