THE HANDSOME FAMILY RELEASE WILCO COVER

Wilco and The Handsome Family go way back. Brett and Rennie Sparks met Jeff Tweedy in Chicago in the early nineties. Tweedy was responsible for lending them the equipment they used to record their 1998 album Through The Trees. He also played on the record and contributed backing vocals to several songs. Rennie can recall Tweedy taking his guitar and Univibe into co-producer Dave Trumfio’s tiny bathroom to record guitar for Where the Birch Trees Lean and remembers Tweedy clearing his throat to sing backing vocals on Cathedrals while they sat on Dave’s sagging couch staring up at him. Apparently Tweedy also made a mean sandwich.

Jeff Tweedy has since covered The Handsome Family’s So Much Wine. He has covered it on so many occasions that some sources credit it as having been written by Wilco. Now it’s The Handsome Family’s turn.

To celebrate the release of Wilco’s new album Ode To Joy, 17 artists – including Sharon Van Etten, Low, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett and Cate Le Bon – recorded brand new versions of classic Wilco songs for Uncut magazine’s Wilco Covered CD. The Handsome Family were selected by Tweedy to be one of those 17 artists. They chose to take on Capitol City from the album The Whole Love.
