hd hausmann (ex Grass House) Share New Single + Video for ‘A Modern Weight’ Out Now
A Modern Weight is the second single to be taken from hd hausmann’s forthcoming album Find A Weight, Form A Ground, which follows on 28 June via Panda Cassettes.
hd hausmann is the new project from Grass House’s vocalist and songwriter Liam Palmer, alongside bass guitarist Alex Oates. The duo’s music has been described “a lovely minimalist hymn” (Uncut), and more recently – in relation to the last single Recognise Faces (May 2019) – as a “tranquil wash of colours” (Songwriting Magazine).
The music of hd hausmann is one of soothing melodies which unfold through gentle textures and multi-instrumented layers. Taking in elements of folk and Americana but ultimately producing a kind of outsider pop, hd hausmann recall the early works of The National or David Kitt crossed with Leonard Cohen’s poetic charms. Whilst Palmer’s deep velvety vocal consistently raises comparisons to Tom Waits.
hd hausmann’s new album Find A Weight, Form A Ground, from which A Mordern Weight is taken, has themes of weight and substance whilst also paying homage to Palmer’s love of poetry, a love that has been present in past albums Wiring the Moisture from the Surf (2015) Into The Night, Holding (2018) but never so explicitly.
Whilst other songs on the album reference the works of poets such as Mary Oliver, Sappho, Maggie Nelson, CP Cavafy, E.E. Cummings and Lisa Robertson, A Modern Weight offers a more general exploration and appreciation of the truth and real human experience to be found within poetry. As Palmer explains:
“Poets make us see that now can be an equal or betterment of the past, but we have to own our own time without these pangs of nostalgia littering our perceptions. The truth that poetry tells us is that it is ok to be human but be aware.
These days we are always trying to strip away many of the aspects that have made people human in order that we can wrap them as icons to our history.”
hd hausmann release A Modern Weight as a digital single on 21 June. Their new album Find A Weight, Form A Ground follows on 28 June digitally and on limited cassette via Panda Cassettes.
