SELCI
SHARES VIDEO FOR SINGLE ‘TRUTH IN THE SEA’
ANNOUNCES EP, ‘EFFERVESCENCE’ – OUT AUGUST 28, 2019

Canadian electro-R&B singer and soundscape artist, Selci, is sharing her new video for ‘Truth in the Sea’. The new track appears on the Calgary-by-way-of-Winnipeg artist’s debut Effervescence EP, due out on August 28, 2019.

The lead single is a sumptuous blend of mood and gloss, oscillating between crystalline synths, pillow-soft basslines, and Selci’s light-as-air vocal crescendos.

“Truth in the Sea” draws from Scottish folklore of mythological creatures, known as Selkies or “Seal Folk,” which change from seal to human form by shedding their skin. Part of the folktale tells of fishermen stealing the tail of the Selkie to keep them on land as their wives.

As Selci explains, the track and video take on several meanings. “It’s, in part, about being trapped in a relationship and women being confined throughout history. When I heard the story of the Selkie I thought that the mythology might have been created because of the realities that women faced at that time, and I related it back to what I learned about women in ancient music. If you were a woman that wanted to play music in ancient Greece, you were restricted to certain instruments and to playing at home. Certain genres of music and technical roles in music, while changing, are still very much gendered.

“I’m also putting a modern spin on the folktale and using the myth as a metaphor for how toxic relationships and society can strive to pull you away from your true nature and creative essence. At times, as an artist, I’ve struggled to reconnect with that essence, and it weighed heavily on me. That essence might be the closest thing to freedom we can find in this life.”

As an artist, Selci takes the reins on all sides of her music and bold aesthetic, from video directing, styling and set designing to writing, singing and producing. Her first forays into production can be heard on early singles, “Gone W Thuh Wind” and “APPLE$,” where she celebrated various expressions of beauty while challenging beauty standards.

On Effervescence, Selci bridges the seductive, iconoclastic electronics of FKA twigs, the bedroom R&B of Jessy Lanza, and the minimalist-pop of James Blake to shape her sonic vision. Though trained in opera, contemporary and classical musical styles, Selci uses ambience and rhythm to compose sounds that exist on the fringes of pop music.

Sound guru Sylvia Massy (Prince, Kate Bush) was enlisted to mix the EP and Matt Colton (New Order, Blood Orange, James Blake) was tapped for his mastering touch. Adding further to the five-song collection, the record features an array of vintage flourishes including rare instruments and equipment from the National Music Centre in Calgary.

Over the past year, Selci has played over 50 shows across Canada, sharing bills with Neon Indian and Ryan Hemsworth, including festival slots at Canadian Music Week, Sled Island, Big Fun Festival, and more. Look for summer concert dates and debut UK shows to be announced soon.
