“Emerson Snowe charmed the shit out of everyone at the Australian Barbecue on the beach. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Snowe’s set was a wonderfully rousing; a warm and fuzzy beginning to day three.” – Gigwise
“Emerson Snowe capitalises on the heavy crowds forming at The Haunt with a set full of saccharine melodies. The Brisbane songwriter draws on psych-y soft pop influences, channeling The Flaming Lips and Ariel Pink.” – DIY
“Emerson Snowe brought sad hearts to life at Ditto’s Aussie BBQ” – Record of the Day
“Emerson Snowe’s bewitching set was the perfect introduction, all ad hoc humour and perceptive songwriting.” – Clash

Following an incredibly successful trip to The Great Escape and with headline shows across the UK over the next week, Brisbane’s Emerson Snowe has dropped his debut EP ‘That’s Rock ‘n’Roll‘ via Liberation Records. He has also shared a new video for one of the EP’s tracks, “Our Home”.

Emerson Snowe’s profoundly honest yet unconventional approach to music resonates throughout the EP. It’s a collection of tracks that see the 24-year old, real name Jarrod Mahon, put his heart on his sleeve, documenting battles with his own mind and the decision to quit drinking.

That’s Rock’n’Roll’ is collection of songs that were written 2 years ago after I ended one vice for another”he explains. “Lyrically ‘That’s Rock ’n’ Roll’ is simple and honest. Ihad no use in trying to find round-about ways of telling a memory rather than just literally telling it.”

From recent single, “Human”, in which Mahon addresses his parents and pleads “I just want to feel like a human being for you” to the dreamy romanticism of “Could You Love Me?” and the burgeoning optimism of “Sunlight”, the collection sees Mahon shine a light into the corners of his mind with touching honesty and poeticism.

Despite the vulnerability and struggle, there’s a sharp wit and self-awareness that underlies everything Emerson Snowe does. “A lot of what I do feels like an inside joke with myself, so naming my debut EP was no different”he says.“At times I find myself messing up a song on stage and then instantly saying, “that’s rock n roll” in a way of self-deprecation but the audience finds it humorous, and so do I. The amount of times I said that phrase in the past couple of years to me, meant I had to call the EP that.”

Inspired by contemporary artists like Ariel Pink and King Krule (both of whom he has toured with), greats such as Lou Reed, Nick Cave & Patti Smith, as well as a diet of French pop consumed during a summer romance spent in Paris, ‘That’s Rock’n’Roll’ combines Emerson Snowe’s idiosyncratic and effusive approach to life with a love of huge melodies.

He concludes: “The EP touches on my impulsive nature, trying to understand others, understanding where one vice ends another begins and giving a lot of myself away and appreciating what is going on around me. I am open – what I write is diary entries and that’s how it will always be.

Fresh from appearances at SXSW last month, Emerson Snowe had a successful debut at Brighton’s The Great Escape last week, having been selected as one of their “First Fifty,” and will now play headline shows across the UK and Europe throughout May. At the start of the year he was picked as one of the NME 100 for 2019 and tracks from ‘That’s Rock’n’Roll’ have already received support from Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1, including a Next Wave feature, as well as continued support from Matt Wilkinson at Beats 1.
