New video ‘Barely Breathing’ out now

London’s newest dream-pop sensation Circe has released her stunning new video for ‘Barely Breathing’, celebrated with an intimate showcase at Hackney’s Paper Dress Vintage.

Led by an icy, ethereal voice and a penchant for the mystical Circe combines dark dramatic lyrics, brooding soundscapes and visceral synth bass to create an otherworldly dimension, as if Kate Bush was exploring the depths of the upside down. Heart-achingly emotive as well as breathlessly enchanting, ‘Barely Breathing’ recalls a lost love and feelings of desire and despair. Written on a sea front, its reverb-drenched production and washes of electronics perfectly encapsulate this.

“The sea became a metaphor for my mental state at the time.” She tells us, “The mercurial nature of the sea and its intrinsic dichotomy of pleasure and danger was like a mirror for my overactive romantic imagination. Ultimately the song is a tonic for feverish despair. I think there is an army behind every heart break. In my case the army is my instruments and the song is an emotional battle rather than a loss.”

The track was produced by Blood Red Shoes’ Steve Ansell and it’s accompanied by a beautifully theatrical video that sits somewhere between abstract cinema of the 1920s and an immersive dreamscape. It was directed by Rachel Povey, a Royal College of Art graduate and Circe’s own sister. The general premise began as a stage show and quickly escalated out of control to the point where Circe sends a ship hurtling into the Earth.

Taking her name from the Greek goddess of magic, Circe was immediately drawn to the characters passion and eccentricities; “Circe encapsulated everything I was feeling as I began writing. I was enraptured by the tales I read of powerful, mystical, she can turn men who have betrayed or hurt her into pigs, but what resonated with me most was her unusual vulnerability and humility that got her thrown out of the house of gods.”

Already turning heads on the London live circuit, as well as earning the praise of 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Circe is a dreamy, dramatic, soundtrack of a sacred heart.

Live dates:

13.02 – Paper Dress Vintage, London (single launch)
