Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, News

December 29, 2018

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2018 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 8th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition; we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take over comes from New Orleans based label, alongside their work with bands, Strange Daisy Records is also an independent graphic design studio. Both Pat and Rob behind Strange Daisy have had an incredible year and have introduced us to some outstanding acts (we’re looking at you Matron). We hand over to the pair to find out more about their year in music…

· Top 5 releases of the year (in no particular order)

Cloud Nothings – Last Building Burning

The intensity and aggression of the record juxtaposed against its pop sentimentality makes it a dense and flavorful record. The nuances of rhythm and tempo are also one of a kind.

Tangled Hair – We Do What We Can

Circuit Sweet readers are probably familiar with this band. We’ve been following these guys since their previous output in Colour. Interesting riffs. Interesting vocals. Great record.

The Redneck Manifesto – The How

I couldn’t have been more excited to hear about a record coming out this year. TRM are an instrumental rock band from Ireland. Their previous records have been on constant repeat for years. They just make the best melodies. This is their first record in 8 years.

Castor – Everything 1994-1998

A band sadly many people don’t know about. This is an Anthology album of all their recordings that they released this year. Hopefully someone hears this and finds their new favorite song. For fans of Hum.

Beach Body – Curb Ciggiez EP

This was a random find that stuck with me. Short and sweet. I can’t help but play some of these tracks over and over. They kinda have a Real Estate vibe and they’re from Canada.

Grivo – Elude

This is an album I just found and am listening to now. It’s incredible so far and could be a contender for a favorite 2018 release. Shoegaze album of the year out of Austin, TX.

· The best gig you have attended

There are two recent ones that come to mind:

The Mercury Program – 11.11.18 – Pensacola, FL

SDR took a field trip to our neighbors in Florida for this one. The Mercury Program performed their album A Data Learn The Language in its entirety. This was a bucket list band.

Minus The Bear / Tera Melos – 11.29.18 – New Orleans, LA

This was a dream. Two of our absolutely favorites. The two bands I’ve probably seen the most. Together.

It was a very different set from Tera Melos that I’ve seen before and MTB are the best.
