Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, News

December 27, 2018

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2018 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been another crazy year of highs and lows- it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 8th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition; we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists. Telling us their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take over comes from Adam Abdelkader Lenox Jr of German quartet Lingua Nada. Adam is part of one of the most exciting bands around and one which we were thrilled to welcome to our online store earlier this year with their own record of the year. Lingua Nada fuse together elements of various genres: you’ll find some garage, some mathrock, shoegaze, posthardcore and more. Adam tells us more about his year in music….

Here is what I have :  I’m not a native speaker, I did my best though!

Triathalon – Online

Hmmmmm that record me feel cozy and sexy, horny and lazy at the same time, that’s the kind of sex it makes me wanna have: lazy sex. Just kind of on the sofa at 4 p.m, you know, moving my hips slowly putting zero effort into the sacred act of reproduction, smelling like weed and Doritos. It sounds like a terrible sexy time I know but hey, that´s how Online makes me feel. FYI, I´m a virgin and the last time I smoked weed, my brain imploded and I started loving this album more than the legalization movement.

The Armed – Only Love

I don’t know how I can explain this. Everything touches me about that release: the music, the videos, the artwork, everything. Basically I wish I would have done that record, it hurts me as a musician to listen to it because it expresses a lot of things I wanted to express on my own and it hurts me as a person because it moves so much things inside my fragile body, its like something is being pushed down my throat in a nasty way to reach my heart, and once this something reaches my heart through the most horrible torture, it just kind of caresses it gently. Damn.

Wayste – The Flesh And Blood

Do you know why the cuban mop stick is the best mop ever? Because it mops shit. Do you know why The Flesh And Blood is the best hardcore record this year? Because it mops all that dusty old hardcore crap we´ve been listening to the last 10 years. Yeah, all that dusty, old, boring d-beat or melodic or dark or whatever hardcore, it mops it all. It’s clear, 3 piece, live recorded, no bullshit: real energy with a concrete message, a solid concept, terrific songwriting, a slight touch of experiment, and an absolutely gorgeous artwork made by the artist going by the name of Hans Morsa. If you´re in your mid 50s, have bleached tattoos and were into that hardcore stuff when you were younger, if you ever sat down with your old buddy outside of that DIY club where the walls are sweating as much as the audience and said “Henry, what would hardcore sound in 2018 ?” well here is your answer. That record is FRESH, old man.

Oat – Hardy

It has about the worst cover and album name ever. Hardy, (named after Ed Hardy) features an artwork style riped-off from the tatoo artist´s internationally known aestethic. And it´s horrible, it´s absolutely repulsive. Thing is once you listen to it, youll get that this is all a joke and all that nonsens was on purpose. Now the exact statement of having such a gross concept remains for you to interpret. Music lacks humor sometimes, and records that make me laugh are rare to be honest, and this one makes me laugh. It´s far from the sophisticated and hip shit I blast in my ear all year and it takes a shit on all of that. It takes a shit on its own genres and scenes as well: too fast to be a stoner and to stoner to be punk: basically, nobody wants these guys and yet lots of people love them for all these reasons, including me. The music on it itself has these heavy pentatonic motorcycle-riffing which just work, catchy “pop-punk”-like hooks, oldschool casual punk-rock shithead sing alongs and HUMOR for f-sake, have fun right now while you can : our civilisation ends in 40 years.

PABST – Chlorine

Seriously how can one not love that ? It´s a compilation of all the worst fuzz boxes on the market that we worship since 40 years, it has killer nirvana-like hooks, guitar solos and stuff. Fuzz-out pop with a real slacker attitude, the singer´s hairdye is as stupid as the 4 chords he keeps playing and their instagram is a memepage. Take all my money, I love that.

The best show you have played this year

When we played Leipzig this year, it was my mom´s birthday so I invited her to the show, and for the first time in my life I made the audience laugh (never happened, for real) when I said “Mom, how does it feel to be 32 ?”Then I invited myself to do a DJ set after the concert : I played all that funky 80-s stuff and whatever I knew my mama would dance to. She ended up being the last one dancing screaming for more tunes at 4am before being kicked out by the bartender who wanted to go home “because it´s really late ma´am”. Jeez old people, am I right ?

The best gig you have attended

Wayste at their release party, last time I’ve been pushed around so much was at a Chariot concert when I was 15. And Leoniden, it was all perfectly executed pop music with very slick twists and surprises, authenticity and energy above average and seriously if you forget about all the 17 years old white girls screaming the lyrics about their first world problems it´s actually super rad. And I like to jump around with the crowd, that´s fun to me.

Highlights of your year

I became a bald dude after watching the lords of dogtown and I started doing sport to look like Jason Statham but aborted the fitness plan after day 13. Ah yeah and I released an album which my mom and my sister absolutely love it so that´s a Highlights.

Artist/Band to watch for 2019

Noga Erez, she is a producer/singer and I bet you a Hawaii Kebab that she´s going to drop something HUGE in 2019. She´s my number one artist when it comes to all that trap-electronic stuff right now, she´s totally raising new standards and she´s just starting. FYI Hawaii Kebab : it´s a kebab with pineapples in it. Yep, I know.

Penelope Ilses, the brighton-beach sunny shoegazy pop rockers have been playing these new touching and beautifully well written tunes live for a while and that’s coming on wax this year. That´s gonna be something.
My little sister, Ania, she´s probably getting a fuzz pedal and a bass for christmas. I’m really excited to hear what kind of fucked up noise a 14 years old kid raised with instagram is going to shred.

Plans for the New Year

I´m buying nice clothes for my bass player with the great amount of money we gonna make out of what´s coming (lol). No shit, he looks like a gopnik working at a skateshop.

A huge thank you to Adam and for Lingua Nada, you’ve had a tremendous

year and we can’t wait to see what happens for the band in 2019.
