Following the release of her debut album, Je Suis Une île (which translates as “I Am An Island”) in May on Heavenly Recordings, French multi-instrumentalist Halo Maud has shared a cover of “Depression au dessus du jardin”.
The song will be released on exclusive 7″, available only at live dates and via Manchester’s Piccadilly Records, who picked Je Suis Une île as one of their Top 10 Records of 2018 and say, “Hazy harmonies, rolling grooves and insistent percussive workouts form the backbone to [Maud] Nadal’s often haunting vocal flourishes, sometimes falling behind to give the vocals their own space. Perfectly measured and beautifully written immersive indie anthems.”
Maud says of “Depression au dessus du jardin“: “It is Catherine Deneuve’s voice (who sang it in 1981) and its atmosphere of late summer which led me to do the cover “Depression au dessus du jardin”. I asked Eddy Crampes to sing it with me because I did not want to make it a too tragic, he has this correctness of interpretation that I admire a lot, sober and yet so expressive. Everything was recorded in my room, with Vincent Mougel on guitar.”

Halo Maud has also received a cover of her own “Du Pouvoir” from This Is The Kit, who stays true to the original whilst stripping back the instrumentation.
This Is The Kit’s Kate says of it, “Du pouvoir. Pouvoir. Ability to do something. Pouvoir. Power.
How we use our ability and our power. Things I’ve been thinking about while I’ve been making this version of Maud’s song. For me this song speaks about self-belief and what we believe ourselves to be capable of.
The frustration of feeling like you can’t do something, and the realisation that our ability to do comes from within.
So often tied up with what we feel other people expect from us and also what we expect from ourselves.
I think it’s good to challenge people and not to pander to their ideas of how you should be. Equally it’s important to challenge yourself and to take risks at doing things you thought maybe you couldn’t or shouldn’t do.
Thank you Halo Maud for the opportunity to cover this song and the chance to experiment and be free about how I play it and what I play in its making!”
This is the Kit – Du Pouvoir (Halo Maud Cover)
Hailing from the French proggy, psychedelic and experimental pop scene that birthed Melody’s Echo Chamber, Moodoïd and cult label La Souterraine, Halo Maud’s ethereal songs flit between English and French language, focussing on notions of freedom and power through a wild and playful lens.
Praise for Je Suis Une île:
“Keyboard-driven dream-pop with chiming guitars that give the air of post-Cocteaus psychedelia, Nadal’s chosen oeuvre couldn’t be more ‘now’: file under yet another reason why French women rule music in 2018.” – Mojo, 4/5
“An unexpected gem” // “At first blush, it’s clotted with period-piece electro textures, but deeper listens reveal a peculiarly compelling, prog-pop heart.” // “Beautifully unmoored, adrift.” – Uncut
“Je Suis Une île is that rarest of things: psychedelia with one foot firmly in the future.” – Shindig!, 4/5
“beautiful and enchanting psych-pop” – Gorilla Vs Bear
“Halo Maud is French pop at its best” – The Line of Best Fit
“Halo Maud creates hypnotic tracks… It’s a pretty heavenly combination.” – DIY
“The music is sweet, soft, beautiful and all-consuming.” – The Quietus
“Maud’s vocals, switching between French and English, drift among the ether accompanied by gentle, floating melodies… Pure bliss.” – Electronic Sound
“Sumptuous pop music of a decidedly French persuasion; charming and biting in all the right places” – GoldFlakePaint
