The duo has recently shared live-favourite ‘Russian Roulette’, their cover version of a song by English/American gothic rock supergroup Lords of The New Church, which included members of The Dead Boys, The Damned, Sham 69 and The Barracudas. Lionel recalls: “We bought the Lords of The New Church’s album on a Wednesday afternoon some years ago in our hometown, Perpignan. It was a second-hand record in very good conditions. We paid peanuts for it. In it, we found a melancholic and addictive song… We heard the song live some time later in Montpellier. The band and their singer Stiv Bators were amazing… Afterwards, we heard a cover by Pascal Comelade. A beautiful instrumental cover, the most beautiful version I’ve heard. When we started touring with Pascal, ‘Russian Roulette’ ended up in the setlist. When the tour was done, we kept playing it with added lyrics.”

The single comes accompanied by a video directed by Elric Duafu. He says: “This video follows the aesthetic I used to design the album cover. A very contrasted black and white that is a clear reference to rock symbolism. There’s also a small reference to romanticism soaked with psychedelia. And the overlaying editing (see the shadow of the drawing hand). This video was recorded and edited at home, the same way The Limiñanas work.

One of France’s most loved treasures, The Limiñanas are Marie (drums/vocals) and Lionel (guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals). Hailing from Perpignan, the duo straddles the boundary between psych, shoegaze, and yé-yé. With hazy, reverb-laden hooks, combined at times with noisy distortion, and fronted by effortlessly cool vocals, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, the band is at once timeless and quintessentially French. The Limiñanas, who have produced records in their own garage for the last ten years, released their first rarities collection ‘Ive Got Trouble in Mind’ through Bill and Lisa Roe’s revered ‘Trouble In Mind’ label in 2014. As with the first installation, ‘Vol. 2′ features rare and unreleased tracks such as the duo’s version of The Kinks’ ‘Two Sisters’ (recorded for a MOJO magazine covermount compilation, produced by Anton Newcombe and remixed by Jim Diamond (White Stripes/The Sonics), a cover of The Lords of the New Church’s ‘Russian Roulette’ and live versions of fan’s favourites.

“What was old is new again”… The old adage is so tired that nobody takes its proper measure: all people hear is the word “old”, when the important one is “new”. Making new things out of old things is an act of alchemy. It’s very complicated. You take rusted lead and transform it into sparkling gold… The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Standells, Chocolate Watchband, Billy Childish and other garage heroes; Ennio Morricone, John Barry and 1960’s Italian songs; Can, Neu! and all the Teutonic knights of motoric groove; The Cramps, of course, Nick Cave, Gainsbourg and tonic psych rock: Lionel and Marie from the Limiñanas know them all by heart, they worship them. They drink from that well and, after a good kneading and pounding, they make something else out of it. “We don’t do revivalism”, states Lionel from behind his beard. “In fact, some purists are accusing us of selling out, which is a good sign”.
