Fresh from a triumphant few days of capacity shows at The Great Escape Festival, Brighton-based alt-pop quartet ORCHARDS are pleased to reveal the video for their new single ‘Double Vision’ set for release on 1st June.

The track is the latest to be taken from their new EP Losers/Lovers which will be released on 6th July 2018 via Big Scary Monsters Records, with a very special London EP release party at Paper Dress Vintage recently announced for 5th July already sold out.

“’Double Vision’ was the last song we finished for the record,” says guitarist Sam Rushton of the new single, “And I guess we wrote it with the summer festivals in mind! Beers, sunshine and good times is the vibe we were going for. We wanted to create a party atmosphere in 3 and-a-half minutes, but also to have a deeper meaning behind the track, as we think it is a really effective juxtaposition. We all see it as our ‘pop banger’ and love playing this one live. It’s the perfect jumping tempo, so you can just have fun with it.”

Speaking of that deeper lyrical content to ‘Double Vision’, front woman and lyricist Lucy Evers explains how the track focuses on the delicate topic of her own struggles with mental health and the stigma still socially attached to it.

“I have struggled with anxiety and depression for a while but was always so ashamed to talk about it,” she elaborates. “I felt less of a human for having a genuine chemical imbalance that was entirely out of my control. The lyrics for this song were the start of me accepting the truth and realising that I shouldn’t be afraid or feel alone. The lyrics almost refer to the two people living inside my head: the confident, independent woman who lets nothing weigh her down and the shy, introverted person who I am at my darkest moments. After losing a friend to their fight with depression I realised how important it is to talk about mental health. It‘s not something to be ashamed of nor feel like you need to hide.”

The video for the single was filmed at the band’s recent support dates with Minnesota trio Tiny Moving Parts by director and long-time collaborator Dan Chase, with their live performances very much tying into Evers’ vision of how that cathartic process of playing shows helps her to deal with the pressures of mental health problems.

“The lyric that I feel resonates the most is ‘Leave me alone, I’m out in the cold. But I am happy with myself here’. To me, it’s about coming to terms with the fact that I’m struggling but I am learning to live within this new state of mind and I’m starting to love myself again. This song is almost the perfect way to get those emotions out – being on stage performing is very much my happy place, so we wanted that to be reflected in the video. It’s simply just us loving being on stage and partying with everyone.”

New EP Losers/Lovers is released 6th July via Big Scary Monsters Records – further live dates TBA.
