Joseph Lawrenson (Dancing Years) announces EP and shares video for first single ‘A Different Life’

London based pianist & songwriter Joseph Lawrenson has shared new single ‘A Different Life’ and announced his debut solo EP ‘I’ll Never Be Young Again’ will be released on 27th July 2018 via Hide & Seek Records, the home of his old band, the acclaimed Leeds quintet Dancing Years.

The Leeds born and now London based songwriter found himself in rural Australia last year working behind a bar in a Tapas restaurant after his previous project Dancing Years came to an end with a series of sold out and emotional headline shows in Leeds & London.

After hitting the reset button and landing in Australia he got to work with old friends and tour mates Dave Symses and Tim Hart of Aussie folk-rock heroes Boy & Bear: “I set myself the challenge to write concise & emotional pop songs” explains Lawrenson. They then recorded the EP in Sydney  “We had a blast! Working alongside such studio veterans really raised the level, I learnt a lot from those guys.”

The theme of travel, fresh starts and upheaval runs through ‘I’ll Never Be Young Again’,“The EP is named after Daphne du Marrier’s terrible first novel, for which I have a soft spot… at the time I read it, it perfectly summed up the restlessness, naivety, hopefulness and discontent of being young. And I suppose the title serves as a sort of mantra to myself, in deciding not to be like that anymore.”

I’ll Never Be Young Again’ was recorded & produced by Richard Belkner & Dave Symes in Sydney at Free Energy Device Studio (Angus & Julia Stone, Neil Finn of Crowded House) and finished in Leeds with old friend and collaborator James Kenosha (Rhodes, Dry The River).

Talking about the inspiration behind his new single, Lawrenson explains: “My band disbanded, I quit my job, fell in love and moved to rural Australia. I then embarked on a 2000km cycle trip across south East Asia. Everything that had come to define me completely disappeared, and it was so liberating.  This is a song about taking yourself out of what is familiar and starting again. It’s about feeling alive.”

Capturing his appreciation for the honest song writing and synthesised sounds of The Blue Nile and Loney Dear, these piano and synth driven love songs are a charming and well-crafted first release and a sign of things to come from a talented writer with a new lease of life.

Lawrenson will celebrate the release of ‘I’ll Never Be Young Again’ with two headline shows in Leeds & London.

04/07/18 -The Waiting Room – London
