“Australian musician and artist Ben Montero sounds the way his cartoons feel: vibrant with a melancholic tinge, the hopeful sadness that comes along with being in the world.” – Stereogum
“Performer distills Montero’s sugar coated glossy psychedelic pop into 10 sweet tunes that embrace the spirit of Wings, 10cc, Kaatu, ELO, Todd Rundgren and Supertramp in a manner somewhere between latter day saints The Flaming Lips, Ariel Pink, Foxygen, Mile High Club, Temples, Pond and Tame Impala.” – Shindig
“With an imagination sitting slightly askew from the norm, Montero’s world view flits between acerbic outsider the nonsensical, gleefully playing with expectations.” – Clash
“Supertramp vibes and a big heart.” – The Fader
“Performer’s spindly rhythms and gauzy melodies make for a record easy to slink into, getting lost in its technicolour, watercolour, hypercolour, splotches. Guitar music rarely feels this saucy.” – Stack
Montero is Australian artist and musician Ben Montero, who releases his new album Performer today via Chapter Music. Blending romantic soft rock with modern psychedelia, Performer is a lavish technicolour odyssey filled with magic and wonder. It was produced by fellow Australian visionary Jay Watson of Tame Impala/Pond, at Mark Ronson’s Tileyard studios in London, along with Grammy Award winning engineer Riccardo Damian.
Currently based in Athens
, Greece, Montero also spends time in Melbourne, New York, Austin and anywhere else he can lay his hat. He describes Athens as; “one of the last cities in Europe that can still be old, weird and chaotic.”
His current live band is made up of members of Greek psych heads Acid Baby Jesus
, plus other Athens friends. They went out on a mammoth European tour with Mac DeMarco
in November 2017 and will be heading back for headline shows in February 2018. He will also be playing at the Primavera Sound
in Barcelona at the end of May.
As well as being somewhat of an idiosyncratic character and musical mastermind, he is also a visual artist. Ben’s comic-based style highlights the universality of small human moments via a cast of furry (or sometimes slimy) friends. He draws a column for Vice and his art has graced album covers, t-shirts and posters for Mac DeMarco
, Ariel Pink
, Kurt Vile
and others, including the extraordinary artwork for his own projects. See more info here
Montero has long been at the heart of Melbourne’s music scene, playing in the duo Early Woman with Hannah Brooks and releasing his debut album as Montero, The Loving Gaze, in 2013. He was picked up by prominent Australian label Chapter Music for Performer, his long-awaited follow-up.
Performer glories in the widescreen soft rock tradition, updating the romantic classicism of golden era love songs with a psychedelic pop brush. Montero’s music evokes the extended soundscapes and textures of 70s prog, the easy listening adult weirdness of Jimmy Webb and Burt Bacharach, and the sports arena pounding of vintage MOR rock – sometimes all in the space of one song. With an emphasis on clear vocals, soaring melodies, lush instrumentation and dreamy glam pomp, Performer ventures into gently surreal realms of romance, yearning, and wonder.
