Leeds’ premier purveyors of infectious indie-pop, Marsicans, unveil the animated video to latest single Wake Up Freya, accompanying the introspective, twinkling tune with playful and aptly childlike visuals, given the track’s theme.

I wrote the song for my niece before was born. My brother mentioned she might be called Freya so, after I wrote the song, they kind of had to name her that!” Newbigging says,  “It was a particularly bad news day and I started thinking about how amazing the world is when you’re young, compared to how fucked up everything seems to be when you’re older. The song was written as if I was talking to her. It’s about taking stock of everything that’s good around you and how eventually it’s those people and moments that count rather than all the perpetual shit that surrounds you.”

It perhaps makes sense for Marsicans to chill out and take stock for a moment, 2017 being the whirlwind year for them it was. Signing to Manchester indie-label LAB Records, clocking well into seven-figure streaming numbers on Spotify, taking in tours with JAWS, Clean Cut Kid and Hippo Campus (as well as their own headline jaunts around the UK getting bigger in venue size and profile) and getting playlisted on BBC Radio 1, the quartet’s rise has been relentless.

Marked as one of tastemaker extraordinaire Huw Stephen’s Alternative Tips for 2018,the guys were invited to record a session in the iconic Maida Vale studios, which was broadcast out on Radio 1.

The band are also are upping the stakes again with their biggest headline tour to date coming up in March. Newbigging, alongside bandmates Oli Jameson (guitar), Rob Brander (bass/keys) and Matthew ’Cale’ McHale (drums) continue to push the boat out in terms of their sound and scale of ambition, and Wake Up Freya is subtly confident statement of intent from the boys from Leeds.

Wake Up Freya is out now via LAB Records.
