Rad Releases ’17 – Vasa

December 23, 2017

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2017 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 7th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take-over comes from Scottish based quartet and friends of the site, VASA. Continuing to tour relentlessly this post rock outfit blow our minds. Each release be it debut album or single is simply impeccable and their live shows will captivate. We handover to find out more about their year in music..

Best Show of 2017
There’s a few we could pick from, as it’s been a really good year in terms of shows. I can’t really pick one for definite so I’ll need to go for a Top 3. I think for the sheer energy of the whole show, thanks to the incredible crowd, our gig in Benicarló in Catalonia on our recent European tour with MNHM was a stand out. We played an amazing gig in Nancy on a boat with Fall of Messiah and Poly-Math, which was great fun and, finally, The ArcTanGent Warm-Up/Stag and Hounds Farewell Show in Bristol was great fun, even though it’s mostly an alcoholic blur now. Those 3 will take some beating.
Best Attended Show of 2017
I’m going to be mega selfish and pick my favourite show of 2017. I saw Primus at The Roundhouse and it was my first time ever seeing them, and I was not disappointed. There my absolute favourite band on the planet and it was a pretty perfect night all round.
Highlights of 2017
I’d say all 4 of our 2017 tours were highlights. We got to share the stage across the UK and Ireland with Body Hound, Poly-Math, Fall of Messiah and MNHM who are all absolutely incredible in their own right. It was a pleasure getting to do so many shows with all of them. Getting to hang out with And So I Watch You From Afar after their shows in Nantes and Glasgow was a great high point as well. They’re lovely boys…just don’t go out drinking with them, unless you like pulverising hangovers.
Artist/Band to watch in 2018
I’d have to go with either Chiyoda Ku or Leeched. Chiyoda Ku are just sickeningly talented musicians and have been making serous waves over the past year. Leeched, a hardcore band from Leeds, snuck up on me out of nowhere late this year and their EP is well worth a listen. They’re definitely on to something.
Plans for 2018
We’re going to be a little on the quieter side in 2018. We’re planning to spend the year writing album 2, which we’ve already began, and we’re really wanting to make sure this next release is as good as it can be. We’re playing StrangeForms Festival in Leeds in April alongside Rolo Tomassi and a host of others, but aside from that we’re focusing all our energy on writing and then recording.
A huge thank you Vasa for your contribution. We can’t wait to hear what album 2 will be like!
