Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, Reviews

Rad Releases ’17 – Taylor Jay of Western Daughter

December 30, 2017

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2017 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 7th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take over comes from Taylor Jay of Western Daughter. Our second take over from the incredible Western Daughter. As we mentioned earlier we truly are  besotted with this band, the music Western Daughter create completely captivate on each listen.  A band we discovered at the tail end of 2015, an act who have since grown enormous amounts. In March of this year they released their debut album which is one of our best records of 2017. Driftwood Songs is one of the strongest, confident album releases we’ve come across and this record will undoubtably stand the test of time.

We hand over to Taylor Jay who tells us more about the records that have shaped his year..

The best show you have played this year and why:Camp Daze Music Festival in Missoula, MT. The festival is really DIY and has so many great people involved. The crowd was super supportive and it was the best set that I feel our band has played to date. Everything just clicked. The A/C went down in the building we played in before our set and it was super sweaty. Somehow I think that made it more fun. It was such a great time in general. This band called Blood Orphans played before us, and they blew me away. We also got to camp out at night and watch Rozwell Kid perform in this old barn that had been converted into a bicycle shop. It was a great night.

The best gig you have attended and why:
Girlpool. They sound even better live some how!

Highlights of your year:

to work with Take This To Heart Records on our first record has been real neat. They are so supportive and it’s still pretty surreal to me. A bunch of friends that also play in bands released incredible music too and it’s inspiring seeing their releases come together and hearing what they’d been up to. I collected way too many new guitar pedals and basically have a entirely different board than this time last year. Favorite new pedal I picked up is the TOMKAT Daydreamer.

Artist/Band to watch for 2018:

Friends in Love from Portland \m/

Plans for the New Year:
Finish writing Western Daughter’s next album and hopefully get it recorded. Spend more time with the outdoors, traveling, reading, learning and yoga.

A huge thank you to Taylor, that playlist is unreal! We cannot wait to hear the next album from Western Daughter and wish you all the best for 2018.
