Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, Reviews

Rad Releases ’17- Hoggs Bison

December 20, 2017

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2017 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 7th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Kick starting our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Bristol’s Hoggs Bison are the first to take part in our annual take over. Hoggs Bison play math-rock with a difference, while the music is still played with a technical brilliance, there is a warmth to the bands sound that definitely makes the stand out from the crowd. The band have had a rewarding year with the release of their incredible debut album.

Hoggs Bison Top 5 Releases of 2017…….

Part Chimp – IV
We had the opportunity to play with these guys earlier in the year and they were an almighty powerhouse, the recording delivers the beef too.

Drahla – Third Article
Love the attitude and feel of this EP, discordant guitars with rolling bass lines sound amazing along with vocals that remind of Bikini Kill and early Delgados. Win win.

Mogwai and GY!BE releases almost go without saying – popular driving accompaniments.

Also a worthy nod to our chums in Lambhorn and Chiyoda Ku who both dropped incredible albums this year.

The best show you have played this year and why
ATG can be the only answer here! Such a unique and great festival it was so much fun to play and the crowd made us feel very welcome.

• The best gig you have attended and why
GoGo Penguin were off the scale. Jambinai & Tricot also stand out for sure – aside from superior song crafting both were captivating for their emotion and energy respectively.

Highlights of your year
We’ve had quite a busy year so there’s a few highlights. Releasing our debut album on vinyl and the coinciding launch festival was pretty special – and that was before Lambhorn played a set in their pants!
We went on our first European tour and got a taste of how nice those folk are over the water. …oh and did we mention playing ATG.. obvs.

Artist/Band to watch for 2018
Twisted Ankle. Codices. Data Barons. Azacca. Real Terms. The Shoguns Decapitator.

Plans for the New Year
We’re currently holed up writing some new songs and then, if we can talk some promoters into it, a whole load of gigs!
A huge thank you to all of Hoggs Bison, we’ve got an album review of their stunning debut hitting the site shortly so watch out for that.
We can’t wait to see what 2018 brings and looking forward to more from Hoggs Bison.
