EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY debut stunning animated shorts film for “The Ecstatics”
Texas-based instrumental experimentalists Explosions in the Sky have unveiled the first music video from The Wilderness, far and away the most ambitious and accomplished record in the band’s oeuvre. The video is a stunning stop-motion animation clip for “The Ecstatics” by director Hayley Morris, who elaborated on the meticulous animation process via an interview and behind the scenes clip that are up at Fast Company. The band are also set to head out on a new run of North American tour dates in continued support of the album. The live shows for The Wilderness to date have reflected the aggressively modern and forward-thinking approach of the band’s current chapter, both musically and visually, consequently selling out the biggest venues of their storied career.

The Wilderness is a bold, experimental work combining the band’s unique song craft with the cinematic sensibility that has elevated them to the level of regard and demand they enjoy as film composers. It is an album where shoegaze, electronic experimentation, punk damaged dub, noise, and ambient folk somehow coexist without a hint of contrivance—and cohere into some of the most memorable and listenable moments of the band’s expansive body of work—“proper” studio albums and major motion picture soundtracks alike.

Critical acclaim for The Wilderness, out now on Bella Union:
“Stunning… A quietly masterful, emotionally rich work.” Pitchfork – 8.0
“Gloriously beautiful.” Metro – 5 Stars *****
“Among the gentle pianos and Eno-like ambience are percussive depth charges, industrial machine-like sounds and frantic math-rock… Tangle Formations and Infinite Orbit are terrific tunes, and the elementally softly rocking Landing Cliffs makes a spectacularly pretty climax to another beautifully understated epic.” The Guardian – 4 Stars ****
“With The Wilderness Explosions In The Sky have created something very special indeed.” Record Collector – 5 Stars *****
“Music that unspools slowly but inexorably in a peculiarly muscular kind of slow motion… Expansive and cinematic… Music that extends to the horizon.” Uncut – 8/10
“Atmospheric and beautiful… The Wilderness is quieter and prettier than anything they’ve done before, with more complexity and less catharsis.” Q – 4 Stars ****
“Although recognisably, and powerfully, the work of Explosions In The Sky this is now a band whose music undulates: sinuousness dominates over the full 46 minutes.” MOJO
“The best moments are those that juxtapose seemingly incompatible textures. In Logic of a Dream its huge slabs of industrial noise and gently propulsive krautrock: in Colours In Space its melancholy chords, ghostly washes of oceanic sound, then three minutes of classic post-rock.”  Sunday Times
