SHARES ‘WILD GRASSES
TAKEN FROM ‘DOROTHY’ DUE TO BE RELEASED IN SPRING

Diagrams’ shares brand new single ‘Wild Grasses’, taken from the highly anticipated album ‘Dorothy’ which is due to be released in May.  The song was inspired by a poemDorothy Trogdon sent to Genders as part of their months-long email exchange, through which they wrote the lyrics for the album.  ‘Wild Grasses’ could be a secular hymn to the natural world; filled with the rich imagery of grassland, hidden stones and the lifting of inner darkness. It will be available on all digital platforms on the 10th February.

Sam Genders on the song: “A recurring theme of the album is the act of taking solace from being alone in nature. I crave that escape at times and I feel from our conversations that Dorothy does too. She certainly expresses that feeling beautifully in many of her poems. It’s a song about leaving the frenetic modern world and feeling that sense of stillness inside”

When Diagrams’ Sam Genders first opened Dorothy Trogdon’s book of poetry, ‘Tall Woman Looking’, little did he know that two years later, he and the 90-year-old Orcas Island poet would have written a whole album’s worth of songs together and a team of top producers and arrangers including Mike Lindsay (Tunng, Speech Debelle, Low Roar),Kristofer Harris (Smoke Fairies, Clock Opera) and Kelly Pratt (St Vincent, David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Beirut) would have helped him turn the songs into an album of aching melodies, thoughtful poetic lyrics and subtle, beautiful arrangements.

Says Genders – “I’ve never been involved in a project quite like this. Working with Dorothy has been a real inspiration and a hugely enjoyable experience.  We live in a culture that focuses a lot on youth and it was refreshing to engage with someone of an older generation.”

‘Dorothy’ is due to be released in May on Sheffield based new independent record labelBookshop Records.

Diagrams is the solo project of Sam Genders, founder member of Tunng, The Accidentaland Throws.

Diagrams’ debut album ‘Black Light’ was released in 2012. In 2014 Sam spent 5 weeks in Changsha, China as musician in residence on behalf of The British Council and The PRS Foundation, collaborating with local musicians and writing an online blog that was later featured in The Guardian.

His second album ‘Chromatics’ was released in January 2015 on Full Time Hobby Records.
