Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, Reviews

Rad Releases ’16- North End

December 24, 2016

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2016 quickly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 6th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Our annual end of year tradition is where we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take over comes from long time friends of Circuit Sweet, the incredible instrumental 4 piece North End. Earlier this year we featured the new label AM 800 SOUND and they announced their plans to release a new album from the Pennsylvania quartet- a long awaited and highly anticipated record. With a busy year under their belt to write and record ‘Alpha State’ due in a few weeks, we hand over to the band to find out more about their year in music…

Circuit Sweet Rad Releases – North End

Top 5 Releases:

1 – Tycho – Epoch

We are very big fans of the ambient/electronic composition of Tycho. The beautiful sounding guitars and big swells of ambience make this one of our favorite release the year. Definitely a soundtrack that’s perfect for relaxing and taking in the sights around you. Favorite track is “Source.”

2- Signal Hill – Alturas

Our long time friends have done it again with a really special release. The vinyl design by guitarist Rishi Arora is on another level, and the album compliments those visuals with it’s cinematic sounds. It flows spectacularly from start to finish and is among our favorites for the year. Favorite track is “We Were the Waves.”

3- Enemies – Valuables

The sounds of Enemies were a huge influence on us the last couple of years and it’s a shame that we have to say goodbye. Although it’s a departure from their other albums with a more laid back vibe we found this release to be a fitting way to bid farewell to a band we really admire. Favorite track – “Houran.”

4- Stage Kids – Intra Mental

This was definitely our most most anticipated album this year since their previous one, “Killer Tofu” was released in 2011. Absolutely the mathiest, jazziest, most melodic piece of music we’ve heard in years, this album is incredible from start to finish. The production on the electronic tracks are extremely well done as well, we highly recommend any fan of math rock to check this one out. Favorite track – “Morning Sunrise.”

5- Owel – Dear Me

We’re very proud of our friends in Owel, they recently got signed to Equal Vision Records and have seen great commercial success with their newest release “Dear Me.” Beautifully inspiring vocals and instrumentation as always, it’s one of the most solid albums they’ve put out. Favorite track – “Pale Soft Light.”

The best show you played/why-

This was actually a really interesting year for us because we didn’t play any shows! We’ve been a band for almost a decade and that’s never happened. Instead we focused all of our energy on completing our new album “Alpha State.” We plan to play some special shows shortly after the release next year.

Best Gig you have Attended

-(Marcus) Tool @ The Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. I’ve been listening to the band Tool since middle school but have never once seen them live. It was a dream come true to watch Danny Carey destroy the drums and finally see the bands visuals live. I was incredibly lucky to get tickets so the opportunity may never happen again.

Highlights of your year

Finally finishing “Alpha State” after nearly working on it for 3 years! The excitement and anticipation we feel of letting our fans hear new material can hardly be contained. It was incredibly humbling to complete this project and get it mastered this year. Also, we’ve never pressed our music on vinyl so that was a huge deal to us.

Artist/band to watch for 2017

Stage Kids – the album they dropped this year was a masterpiece. They’re only destined for bigger and better things.

Plans for the new year

We are going to release “Alpha State” on January 10th and then play some shows shortly after that. Our goal is to reach as many ears as possible so we are going to support the album as hard as we can in 2017. Then we’ll figure out where to go from there.

January 10th can’t come soon enough, this will be our first album of the year 2017! Good luck with the record and tour and we wish you all the best for the new year.
