Radical Face Shares Beautifully Eerie Illustrated Video for ‘Midnight’

October 22, 2016

“Sweet, pastoral portrait songs, intricately arranged and intimately sung.” – MOJO

“A wonderfully engrossing, strangely deceptive work.” – Clash Music

“This is music of magic and intimacy with mass appeal…” – The Independent

“Instantly captivating.” – The Wild Honey Pie

Ben Cooper aka Radical Face has unveiled a video from his latest release The Family Tree: The Leaves, the final installment from his The Family Tree trilogy of records released via Nettwerk. ‘Midnight’ is a beautifully eerie and mesmerising video which was illustrated by hand by Laura Bearl, and then digitally coloured by Ben’s adopted niece Ozni Foxglove. Watch the video below.

Ben explains the process behind the video – “When thinking of a way to do a video for this track, I knew I couldn’t film it. The subject was a bit too fantastic to pull of well without a budget beyond things I ever do. So in thinking of another approach, I kept imagining 80s American public broadcasting shows, where they’d have a narrator telling a story and everything was not-quite-animated — just drawings that would fade between each other. I asked my friend Laura Bearl, who’s always done cool illustrations and short-form comics, to direct and illustrate the video, and then my niece, Ozni Foxglove, to paint it. They nailed it. It feels exactly like those old shows to me.“

The Family Tree: The Leaves brings to a close an unprecedented musical journey that began in the back shed of Ben’s family home in Jacksonville, FL nearly 10 years ago, and solidifies him as a unique and prolific storyteller. Having always been interested in stories surrounding multi-generational family sagas, Ben embarked on a series of “Family Tree” albums, which trace the fantastical lives of a 19th century family, The Northcotes. Certain melodic patterns are used to represent certain family members, and those melodic patterns mutate and are passed down from generation to generation. This last installment continues the narrative of The Northcotes, offering a polished, textured sound entirely crafted by Ben, who plays nearly all the instruments on the album. His DIY-ethic, which was forged in the early days with a four-track in his family’s back shed, has evolved into a lushly orchestrated album.
