SUGAR CANDY MOUNTAIN
JOSHUA TREE PSYCH-POP BAND, SUGAR CANDY MOUNTAIN UNVEIL DEBUT UK ALBUM RELEASE ‘666’ PRECEDED BY SINGLE ‘EYE ON YOU’ OUT 03.06.16 ON SUPER FAN 99
While travelling America last year Super Fan stumbled across Sugar Candy Mountain playing at an Echo Park record store and were instantly hooked. Always at the back of the labels mind they got in contact this year and to their delight had timed a speculative email to perfection. The band had just finished recording new album ‘666’ and the label fell in love on first listen.
Joshua Tree based, Sugar Candy Mountain deliver carefully built psychedelic odes bringing to mind Abbey Road era Beatles and more recently band such as Tame Impala and Jacco Gardener. 666 feels like something unearthed from a box of records found in your dad’s garage, glowing wistfully with vintage inspired tones, rambling organs, fuzzed out guitars, shimmering keys and sprawling drums. Ash Reiter’s woolly voice croons with icy warmth of Francoise Hardy, while Will Halsey’s tender Lennon-esque vocals uncoil with easy languor. Recorded with Jason Quever of Papercuts, the bands sophomore album sits comfortably between 60’s Laurel Canyon bliss and the more modern production of Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips/Tame Impala).
666 is preceded by Eye on You, a perfect slice of sunshine indie-pop sounding like The Pastels or Camera Obscura if they had come from California rather than Scotland. The song may have a retro sound but is very much about today’s world. Ash explains;
“With the internet now we can’t ever really feel far away from people. We are compelled to spy on them through Facebook or Instagram. The idea being we don’t like people being far away but then they end up being too close for comfort”
Eye on You is released on limited octagon shaped white vinyl on 03.06.16 with the album following later in June.
