SUMAC, highly-lauded powerhouse trio of Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom,Mamiffer), Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), and Brian Cook (Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch) have announced a Summer headline European tour. Support will come from Mamiffer.
The nine-date tour will also include a Porto show with Sun Kil Moon, and an appearance at Roskilde Festival in Denmark, sharing the stage alongside the likes of Cattle Decapitation, Cate Le Bon, and Protomartyr. A full list of dates is below.
SUMAC invests in the recursive exercises of chaos and control, and the results are a testament to the tour-honed collective intuition and technical skills of the trio. Their forthcoming debut Thrill Jockey release, What One Becomes, was recorded at The Unknown in Anacortes, WA and mixed at GodCity Studios in Salem, MA with Converge’s Kurt Ballou and the resulting five songs are dense aggregates of rhythm, force, and vigour.
The album’s first single, “Rigid Man” gained critical praise since being released in March from the likes of Pitchfork, Stereogum, CVLT Nation, The 405, Rock-A-Rolla, Visions, and New Noise. The trio’s debut album, 2015’s The Deal, received high review scores and featured on countless ‘Best Of’ lists for the year; Revolver Magazine calling it “huge, crushing, and very down-to-earth and organic.” Now, fast-forward a year to What One Becomes, the trio has elevated the songs’ complexities with a greater entanglement of velocity, density, form, and function. The music of What One Becomes requires that each player be attuned to the dynamics and the tension within the multilateral structures, they are truly a band pushing the limits of heavy music.
