US Tour Dates Announced

All People are thrilled to share their new single “Fearful / Sick,” the latest song from the band’s upcoming self-titled album. Due out on May 20th via Community Records, the New Orleans quartet premiered the single with Culture Collide, offering another glimpse into the sprawling post-punk tendencies of their new record. Speaking about “Fearful / Sick,” Culture Collide shared, “A distinctive minor keyboard lick breezes through a chaotic post-punk rhythm, as Greg Rodrigue’s monotone garage vox gives the song a no-wave feel.”

“Fearful / Sick” is a personal song that deals with mental illness and overcoming obstacles and limitations. The song’s driving waves of synth and bouncing rhythms keep the mood dreamy yet driving as the vocals shift between depressed and optimistic. Speaking about the song’s lyrics, Rodrigue shared:

“I wrote the lyrics for this one while feeling fairly depressed on tour. The song is me describing my clinical anxiety, which has at times lead to severe delusion and panic attacks. On a few occasions I’ve been sent to the psychiatric ward of hospitals for my mental condition. It’s exhausting to feel that any day at any given time, I can lose control of my “mental grip” and be lead into a dark realm of severe alienation from not only other people, but also the person that I would describe as “myself”. There are two choruses in the song. The first chorus states “I want none of this” as a feeling of exhaustion and a plea for help from living in the shadow of depression and anxiety, the second time the chorus comes around, I flip the lyrics and sing “I want all of this”. It is meant to be a more uplifting tone, plus an acknowledgement of my fellow human beings. It is acceptance that I am not alone in this feeling, and that through friendship, family, and community we / I can overcome and live with mental illness.”

“This music creates an introspective feeling both sonically and lyrically to explore the frustration that comes from having a lack of control.” – Stereogum

All People’s initial concept was “All People Translate Pure Unfiltered Emotion”. The phrase described what the band would be for the members: a conduit for emotion and feeling. It’s a kind of mantra or spiritual belief that also touches on the idea that they wholeheartedly believe there is a pure and common energy connecting all of humanity. Music is All People’s method of self expression within this common energy, but each person has their unique way of expressing what’s in their hearts.

All People is the band’s third album and the most accurate representation of that concept. The record is a ‘soundtrack to youthful daydreams with fits of ecstasy and a preoccupation with the crushing drama of the small stuff’ — 27 minutes of dark and dreamy post-punk inspired by synth-driven bands of the ’80s and guitar-driven bands of the early ’90s and bound by introspective lyrics. Themes touch on mental illness and anxiety and incidents of death and suicide we experienced among our loved ones — all woven into their perception of human nature. These songs help the band stay positive and not succumb to depression. There is light at both ends of the tunnel.

All People is out Friday, May 20, 2016 on Community Records. The band and DIY label founded by All People’s own Daniel Ray and Greg Rodrigue are based in New Orleans, Louisiana.
