Tortoise share new live video for “Ox Duke”, filmed at Chicago’s Thalia Hall
More dates added to Spring/Summer European tour including London, Leipzig, Lublin, and Rotterdam
The critically acclaimed new album, “The Catastrophist” is out now
“Atmospherically and melodically sublime from premium grade popular and art music precedents. Post pop, anyone?” – Mojo
“Tortoise keep pace with latterday peers Battles and Zombi, a fine feat for a band deep in its third decade.” – Uncut
“Tortoise mix of pelvic trance grooves and jazzy changes remains distinctive.” – Rolling Stone
“A sudden turn to classic rock feels like one of the weirdest moves of Tortoise’s career – but it also feels so right.” – Boston Globe
“Dense, polyrhythmic experiments into texture, timbre and dynamics played with an addictive, virtuoso level of restraint.” – Loud and Quiet
“They remain perennially relevant.” – Record Collector
Revered instrumental group Tortoise, comprised of Doug McCombs, Dan Bitney, Jeff Parker, John McEntire, and John Herndon, will be touring heavily throughout 2016 in support of The Catastrophist, their critically lauded new album. They have recently confirmed more new dates, including a headline show at Electric Ballroom in London on 7th July. Full list of dates and festival appearances can be viewed below.
To coincide with these new shows and US tour which starts this week, Tortoise have just shared a live video for “Ox Duke,” a slow-building combination of sonic texture and melody that’s classic-Tortoise, laid atop a propulsive drum beat.
As with the previously released live video for “Shake Hands With Danger,” taken from the same night of in-the-round performances at Chicago’s Thalia Hall, the video offers up rare and special insight of the band re-creating the sounds represented throughout their albums in a live setting.
Please feel free to share the video and new tour dates on your website, blog, twitter feed, etc.
The Catastrophist is Tortoise’s first studio album in nearly seven years, and features guest vocals from Todd Rittmann (U.S. Maple, Dead Rider) and Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo). The group have spent 25 years making music that defies description. While the quintet have nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout their acclaimed and influential six-album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly their own. Recorded at John McEntire’s Soma Studios, The Catastrophist is a record where moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to a brilliant cover of David Essex’s 1973 radio hit, “Rock On,” sung by U.S. Maple’s Todd Rittmann. Since its release the album has gained critical praise from the likes of Mojo, Uncut, New York Times, Stereogum, Loud and Quiet, BBC,SPIN, and more.
