“Atmospherically and melodically sublime from premium grade popular and art music precedents. Post pop, anyone?” – Mojo, 4/5
“Tortoise keep pace with latterday peers Battles and Zombi, a fine feat for a band deep in its third decade.” – Uncut, 8/10
“Dense, polyrhythmic experiments into texture, timbre and dynamics played with an addictive, virtuoso level of restraint.” – Loud and Quiet, 8/10
“They remain perennially relevant.” – Record Collector, 4/5
“This uniquely accessible record is a subtle delight.” – The Skinny, 4/5
“Certainly their best record since 2001’s Standards, here Tortoise sound revitalised.” – The 405, 8/10
The revered instrumental group Tortoise have spent 25 years making music that defies description. While they have nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout their acclaimed and influential album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly their own.
Tortoise will return with the release of their new album, “The Catastrophist” next week. The highly anticipated record already has received praise from the likes of Mojo, Uncut, Pitchfork, Loud and Quiet, Stereogum, and Record Collector.
Ahead of its release, The Guardian has an advance stream of The Catastrophist which you can listen to below. Recorded at John McEntire’s famed Soma Studios, it is an album where moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to hypnotic, bass-and-beat missives like “Shake Hands With Danger,” a cover of David Essex’s 1973 radio hit, “Rock On,” sung by U.S. Maple/Dead Rider’s Todd Rittmann, and the bittersweet soul ballad “Yonder Blue,” sung by Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley.
