Following last week’s release of the acclaimed new album “The Catastrophist“, the revered instrumental group Tortoise has just shared a gorgeous new video for the track “Yonder Blue,” a bittersweet, honest-to-goodness soul ballad featuring the unmistakable and honey drenched vocals of Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley.
Filmed around Belfast’s scenic countryside and much like the song, the video evokes a sense of longing and warm melancholy. Director Joe Martinez wanted to personify this feeling into a character for the Yonder Blue video. Martinez further explains on the concept and character, “a person in pursuit of her identity and a journey that has the feeling of being incomplete. A snapshot of an existential journey and a moment to revel in the undefined qualities of life.”
Recorded at John McEntire’s Soma Studios and their first in nearly seven years, the Catastrophist is a record where moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to hypnotic, bass-and-beat missives like “Shake Hands With Danger,” and a cover of David Essex’s 1973 radio hit, “Rock On,” sung by U.S. Maple/Dead Rider’s Todd Rittmann. Since its release the album has gained critical praise from the likes of Mojo,Uncut, BBC 6Music, New York Times, Stereogum, Loud and Quiet, Record Collector, Chicago Tribune, The Skinny and more.
Tortoise will be touring the world throughout 2016. Sam Prekop (The Sea and Cake) who released his latest sublime solo album “The Republic” last year will be supporting on the European shows in February, except 22nd and 23rd. The band have recently been added to the Primavera Sound Festival line up for June. Full list of EU dates below.
