– STREAM FILM & NEW ALBUM ‘THE WAITING ROOM’ IN FULL ONLINE
– OUT JAN 22ND VIA CITY SLANG
– SCREENING, ACOUSTIC SET AND Q&A AT ROUGH TRADE EAST ON JAN 22ND & OTHER UK DATES ANNOUNCED
In anticipation of the release of their forthcoming album, Tindersticks have unveiled their film for ‘The Waiting Room’, which sees every track accompanied by a short film by its own director.
The film that accompanies ‘The Waiting Room’ is a collaboration with the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival Produced by La Blogotheque and Lucky dog. Renowed filmmakers involved in The Waiting Room Film Project include Pierre Vinour, Christoph Girardet, Claire Denis, Rosie Pedlow and Joe King (who directed the “Hey Lucinda” video), Gregorio Graziosi, and Gabriel Sanna (who directed the “We Are Dreamers!” video).
Speaking about the album, Stuart Staples offered some insight when he said “It took 4 years to create, what seemed like, a huge pile of ideas and then sift though them to find the nuggets that form this album. After 2102’s ‘The Something Rain’, Tindersticks needed some time to figure out this rebuilt, reinvigorated band we had become.
Although the recording, production and arrangements were taken care of in-house, the album also benefits hugely from the brass arrangements of Julian Siegel and the singing of Jehnny Beth from Savages on ‘We Are Dreamers!’ And a last song with Lhasa.
Lhasa de Sela was a great artist and singer but, more importantly, a close friend and creative ally. Before her death in 2010, when she was fit and well, we recorded the singing for the song ‘Hey Lucinda’ together. It has taken a long time for me to be able to return this recording and, hopefully, to do justice to the song we both wanted it to be.”
In 2012 Stuart was invited to be a member of the jury of the experimental section of the CFSFF by it’s chief, Calmin Borel. It was there that the idea for a collaborative film and music project began: to commission a series of short films with the film-makers being given only a song or piece of music as their guidance. At the time no-one thought that a situation would arise for this idea to come to fruition.
In late 2014 the songs for a new Tindersticks album (‘The Waiting Room’) began to emerge from the bands’ studio. From this selection of sketches and demos the short film idea was revisited and very gradually the project came to life.
Calmin’s connection to the music and his great knowledge of short film coupled with Tindersticks very definite sense of aesthetic brought the two together. The response from the directors approached was tremendous and, collectively, brought a varied collection of styles and approaches as a perfect foil to Stuart’s intimate relationship with the songs. These short movies as a part of ‘The Waiting Room’ film project will be part of the bonus DVD.
