The Next 12 Months With…
Hey Little Monster!

As a Herefordshire based media outlet we adore our surroundings, despite covering shows nationwide there is something very special about our local live community. Over the last few years a few key individuals and collectives have worked incredibly hard over time to shape, mould and adjust the Herefordshire live scene. At present, said scene is thriving.

Join us throughout the next few days as we chat to a few Hereford based promoters, venues and several musicians to find out what this year has lined up for them, and for us fans too.

In our first look at this years events’ we speak to new promotions company Hey Little Monster  and the lovely Kirsty Morris, the individual behind the new monthly gig night and their forthcoming debut show. Read our interview below to find out about HLM’s aim for Hereford over the course of the next few months.

  • Firstly Introduce yourselves and your role

First of all let me introduce myself, my name is Kirsty Morris and I am behind Hey Little Monster! I have gained a lot of experience the past couple of years from being involved with Hereford Live, putting gigs on and helping to improve the local music scene. For the past 2 years I have also curated and stage managed the acoustic stage at “Down On The Farm Festival” held at Gwatkins Cider Farm in Abbeydore. During the summer of 2015 I worked at various festivals, large and small around the country, gaining more experience of live music events. I have regularly attended gigs and festivals since i was 16, the last count i did was well over 350 gigs attended! I am a music fan and Hey Little Monster! is a project that is born from a love of live music, nothing more, nothing less!

  • When and where did your promotions team originate from and what’s behind the name?

The idea of Hey Little Monster! came about as I wanted a side project of my own to get stuck into. I am very passionate about music, especially local music and really wanted to help give local performers even more opportunities to play in Hereford. The idea for the name actually came from a song on the excellent Royal Blood album, i thought it would make a good name for a gig night, and in true Noel Gallagher style i thought ” I am having that!”I set it up with the idea of putting gigs on in a “DIY” fashion, basic and simple but as professional as it can be. Herefordshire has an amazing amount of very talented performers and at Hey Little Monster!, the ethos is simply to promote local, original talent, with passion and professionalism.

The motto has to be “Keep It Live, Keep It Local”

  • What do you love most about booking acts and promoting shows?

I started the project at the beginning of this year with a clear vision to simply promote local, original talent. My involvement with the live music scene is simply because i love live music, any such profit from any gig i put on will go directly to the musicians playing. I am very keen to dispel the myth that all promoters are in it for the money, not all of us are! I want to help to contribute towards the blossoming live music scene in Hereford, and if putting on gigs and ensuring that musicians are paid for it helps the cause, then that is more than enough for me!

  • What do you admire about the Herefordshire live scene and it’s community

I enjoy going out and watching live music and i really enjoy researching new acts in the hope of booking them for future gigs. Herefordshire has an abundance of very talented musicians and i hope that i can help provide an additional platform for them to showcase their talents. The live scene in Hereford is thriving at the moment after being stagnant for many years. There are so many talented people and they all deserve a chance to go onto bigger and better things, if i can help in any small way with that, then that would be great! The live community are all very supportive of each other and it is a pleasure to be part of that in some small way. In the coming months i hope to bring a diverse mix of acts, all showcasing their quality and talent.

  • What do you hope you can bring to it over the next few months

The first Hey Little Monster! gig night will be held at The Booth Hall, Hereford on Saturday 6th Feb, featuring two of Hereford’s best rock bands ready to blow people away. Headlining are the excellent Jeaga  with support from the equally great Quarter Stone.

Arran and Willow from the newly opened Booth Hall have been very supportive of this project and i thank them greatly for that. The Booth Hall is going to be a very important addition to the local live scene in Hereford. It is really refreshing and exciting that there is so much passion and enthusiasm shown for everything creative and artistic. The Booth Hall really deserves the support of the people of Hereford and the live scene is already very thankful for their passion and support for all kinds of new projects including this one.
There are many venues in Hereford that are all frequently putting on great live music, all contributing to improving the live scene in and around the city. It is certainly an exciting time to be part of the blossoming live scene in Hereford and I hope to be a part of it for many years to come!
