Supporting Nicolas Godin in London tomorrow
+ Electrowerkz show in January
Following a successful tour with Richard Hawley, and about to return to London to support AIR’s Nicolas Godin at Oval Space tomorrow night, MEILYR JONES has just unveiled a mesmerising video to new single, How To Recognise a Work of Art. The track is the lead single from Jones’ debut solo album to be released in early 2016. Recorded completely live with a full band it is a song about authenticity and forgery of which Meilyr says: “I wrote the song about the preposterous world of art collectors, the panic of what is popular, what will succeed, telling people what to like, what to eat, and the recycling of pop culture. I also wanted to make something light and fun, and full of humour.” How to Recognise A Work Of Art is about the obsession in our time with authenticity and the cult of the artist. In ‘What is Art?’, Tolstoy writes about vanity and the idea that the only way to discern if whether something is authentic is through personal intuition.
The video itself an ode to Fellini’s ‘8 1/2′ and is a walking dream, through Jones’ mind. Meilyr adds: “I imagined the story of the video to the song really clearly and worked with Theatre director Wils Wilson to bring to life the ideas in my head. I love getting people together. My grandmother was an amateur theatre director and I loved going to watch her rehearsing plays in the evenings when I was a boy, you’d see people from the town making the costumes, and singing, my granddad would have designed the set, and the spirit of the whole thing was great. We worked with a group of 12 actors, and over a period of 4 days, transformed a warehouse in Cardiff from scratch to a film set, building and painting the sets.”
The video starts with him being played by an actor (Hugh Skinner of W1A and Poldark), miming along to the song, who is soon killed off by an arrow to the back. Jones is then roped in as a replacement to play himself and walks us through a myriad of strange sets as the only sane man through a confused world of sycophantic art dealers, a Kurt Cobain impersonator and a vision of the three muses before finally becoming a dictatorial emperor figure, who has his portrait painted and ends with him being taken away on a stretcher signing photographs in his own blood.
