Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature

August 17, 2015

When you hear the name ArcTanGent, you don’t need an introduction.  If you’re crazy for math-rock, post-rock, noise, experimental music and basically anything slightly out of the ordinary- then this respected festival is for you.

If you speak to any touring band, any established label, any music loving individual at any live show, you are guaranteed to talk about and asked if you’re attending this year’s ArcTanGent. The smaller sister festival of the equally renowned 2000 trees, and remarkably only in it’s third year, ArcTanGent festival lives up to it’s own legacy. It’s not just a weekend of incredible music they provide but they’ve curated their own solid music community, their own festival hub. The perfect combination of the best music and the best like- minded attendees.

The monumental line up features the likes of  Cult of Luna, Mylets, LITE, CHON, pg.lost, ToundraDillinger Escape Plan, Deafheaven ,The Fall of Troy, 65daysofstatic, OHHMS, Alright The Captain, Cleft, Talons,  Polymath, Deerhoof, Blanck Mass, Helms Alee, Mutiny On The Bounty, Delta Sleep, Axes, The Fierce & the Dead, Quadrupede,  Emma Ruth Rundle, Lambhorn, Juffage, Bodyhound and many many more.

With just a few days left until this years colossal weekend kicks off at Fernhill Farm, it’s time for the fun to begin. Everywhere you look our fellow press lovelies are all talking and hyping Arctangent, they’re every bit excited as we are. Continuing over the next few days we will be chatting to a special handful of talented and unique acts playing this years line up; to find out why ArcTanGent is special to them and who those other acts are that they’re desperate to see perform.

The next band we’ve had the pleasure in chatting to ahead of their set is Canterbury’s mighty OHHMS. We’ve caught this band before and we can assure you they will captivate you but bring your earplugs! OHHMS are definitely one of the heaviest acts on the bill at this year ATG. The band fuse together elements of doom, post-metal, prog and psychedelia and their live performance will paralyse you. That’s all you need to know- get to their stage.

You’re playing this years ArcTanGent- How excited are you?

We can’t believe our luck. We have two EPs to our name that have come out in the past 12 months and so many mad things have happened to us. Being invited to play ArcTanGent was the icing on a very delicious cake that took ages to bake.

What stage are you playing and what can we look forward to from your live set?

Well, originally we were playing the 4th stage I guess it was – the PX3 stage I think it’s called but after we played Temples Festival earlier in the year James who is ArcTanGent’s head dude came to our merch stall to say hello and our bass player Chainy pretty much begged him for booze money. It was a pretty sorrowful sight I can tell you.

Well, a few weeks later we got the call asking us if we wouldn’t mind playing the main stage. We could hardly say no. I guess he took pity on us. The moral of the story is this. If you see James wandering around the site just approach him and ask for beer money. He will love it and let your band play his festival.

I have no idea what time we are playing though or what songs we will play. I’d say be at the main stage for half 2 and you’d be on the right track.

Which acts are you desperate to see perform and why?

Where to start? As we are on tour and will be shooting off to London on Saturday morning it’ll be easier to stick with bands I will physically be able to see. First of all the double whammy on the mainstage before we play with TROJAN HORSE and BODY HOUND is gonna be something to behold. We have played with both bands in the past 12 months and had the greatest time. It’s such a rare treat when you are on the road that you get to play with bands that are “that” good. One band I was definitely gonna go see was 11PARANOIAS but the chances are I will miss them now because they are playing Yohkai Stage and we are due to start on the main stage the minute they finish. I’m gutted about that but I am sure our paths will cross at some point in the future.

Looking at the line up now I would say I’m gonna see some HELMS ALEE just because I loved the front cover of their recent album so much and I know I’ll be checking out BLANCK MASS to see if they can match the hype that surrounds them. ROLO TOMASSI is a no brainer; I love Eva’s delicate vocals on their new record so much. Oh shit, I’ve just noticed a couple more… SONANCE were great at Temples this year, check them out for sure and our label mates WE NEVER LEARNED TO LIVE are playing the Bixler stage. Wow, I tell you I didn’t rate them at first but that record of theirs is a grower. I play it all the time at home. Will be definitely seeing them.

Why is ArcTanGent special to you?

Well it’s my first ArcTanGent, so I dunno if it will be special yet. I love the fact that it’s one person’s vision and his taste is somewhat immaculate. To be part of his vision is enough for us.

Give us some festival advice-what do we need to bring with us for this weekend? Do we need to prepare ourselves!

Toilet roll – I went to Sonisphere when it was last in the UK and was so glad I took my own toilet roll in the arena with me. If you are not one of the first to use them porta loos then good luck if you aint got that paper.

Editors Note: A huge thank you to Paul on behalf of OHHMS for spending time with us, we can’t wait to see you live again. See you shortly!

We’ve only got a few more  artist interviews to follow in the final days. Until then what are you waiting for, get that tent by the door ready for your weekend escape, get everything packed and put on a special tangent playlist and get ready to enjoy this years arc!
