June 8, 2015

New digital single “Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon” to be released on 24th July
Taken from their new album, out now on Moshi Moshi
Live dates inc. London headline show on 18th June

The next single from The Wave Pictures’ stupendous new album is the title-track, Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon’. The whole album was co-written and produced by Billy Childish, lending his garage credentials to Dave Tattersall’s absurdist wit.

Dave says of the song, “Once I saw the moon in the still eye of a flamingo, motionless on one straight leg in London zoo. And once I saw a flamingo in the moon, this great big pink moon that hung in the sky over Portugal and looked like it was on fire.

And this song has yet another moon in it: the drum roll that Jonny ”Huddersfield” Helm peels off in the choruses is pure Keith Moon. People tend not to listen past my voice and notice things like The Who, lurking (or pogoing) in the background. But there they are. Billy plays the guitar on this one and he sounds just like Pete Townsend to me.”

Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon has been embraced by the critics, with the Independent on Sunday calling it “their best work to date” and Record Collector calling it; “a set of great songs, arranged and performed superbly and highly recommended.” The Wave Pictures have just come off their biggest ever, sold-out UK tour and appeared at the 6 Music Festival in Newcastle.
Their prolific songwriting has not let up one bit but the collaboration with Billy Childish has breathed new life in to The Wave Pictures (Jonny Helm, Dave Tattersall and Franic Rozycki), who have consistently produced excellent records since forming as teenagers in 1998. The album was recorded entirely using Billy Childish’s equipment, including his 60s Selmer amps, a 60s drum kit and his rocket-ship shaped guitars. Billy helped to bring out a different side to The Wave Pictures and inject a renewed enthusiasm to the recording process. Tattersall said that he; “was a joy to work with and we love the record. It was the most fun we’ve ever had making a record and to us it’s the most exciting sounding thing we’ve ever done.”
