“Crooning melancholia over Nell’s R&B-tinged beats, Raa’s voluptuous broodings mimic the mind-bending emotional roller-coaster that comes hand-in-hand with relationships” (Ones to Watch) – SPIN
“They write left-field pop songs with a clear and clever lyrical focus” – Dummy
“On their debut album ‘Water’, Rebekah Raa and Nic Nell reinvent the rulebook for fun” – DIY
“Jam in a few off-kilter time signatures and syncopated rhythms, and you’re left with a piece of music that couldn’t sound more wonderfully chaotic.” – The Line of Best Fit
Following the release of their debut album ‘Water’ last month, London duo Rainer share a stunning new video, shot in the north of Morocco & directed by Alexander Brown, for album-titled track ‘Water’. The pair will play a headline London show on July 30th at The Old Blue Last.
Speaking about the video, the band went on to say” Whenever you decide to make a music video, there’s always a feeling of experimentation and discovery – but in this instance it definitely felt like a real life adventure. The title of the track inspired the journey – a friend told us about a town in the north of Morocco called Chefchaouenn where all the buildings are painted blue so we spent the whole budget on flights and a hostel and headed out there.
It’s a very unusual atmosphere shooting a video, halfway up a Moroccan mountain, chasing the light with just two other people. The landscape and countryside were spectacular – so many incredible and unusual places to explore. It was certainly a shoestring challenge, but it was a trip well worth taking and a great exercise in guerrilla film making.”
Rainer is made up of Rebekah Raa and Nic Nell (aka London-based producer Casually Here). The duo formed in 2012 after meeting through mutual friends and shared late nights. Their friendship & musical kinship developed over a love of dark sounds and striking production.
Following the release of their debut EP Hope/Satin/Glass/Dreams at the end of 2013, which garnered an array of attention, the band took a year out to work on their debut record. They locked themselves away in a studio in Elephant & Castle and created ten brand new tracks that broaden their twisted electronic framework & progress their experimental pop sensibilities.
With artwork by Claire Falkenberg from the “Lover Series“, Rainer present a seductive blend of R&B notes, off-kilter synth sounds and engagingly open lyrics throughout ‘Water’, marking an incredibly exciting debut for this emerging London duo.
