Young Benjamins formed in the heart of the Canadian prairies in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2009. The band meld their Canadian, UK, Fransaskois and Persian identities into the rich tapestry that makes up their unique sound. Lead singer and guitarist Neusha Mofazzali emigrated to Canada from the UK less than a decade ago and bought his first guitar at a garage sale for 30 dollars, a year before forming the band. Veronique Poulin (violin, keyboards and vocals) is Fransaskois; Francophone from Saskatchewan and has been playing violin almost all her life, tying traditional and regional styles together with a classical education and pop vernacular. Young Benjamins sound is solidly filled out by Brynn Krysa on bass, and Tyson Goodyear on drums. The name, Young Benjamins is based on the character Benjamin Braddock from the 1967 movie, “The Graduate” played by Dustin Hoffman.
On May 11th, 2015 Young Benjamins will release the new single, Beware of Me as a follow up to their debut full length album Less Argue on Dollartone Records. The song exemplifies the band’s maturation, replete with complex time signatures and improved musicianship. It is a preview of the music to come on the next album, to be released in early 2016. The single release corresponds with a UK tour to include performances at both The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City. Following performances at many prestigious festivals in Canada including Hillside Festival, Regina Folk Festival, Saskatoon Jazz Festival and Pop Montreal, this is the band’s first foray to the UK. They have shared stages with The Mowglis, Stars, Wintersleep, Austra and Yukon Blonde.
While the band is moving away from their folkier roots with Beware Of Me, the new single maintains Young Benjamins dynamic cinematic songwriting, catchy hooks and the intertwined beauty of Mofazzali’s charming lyrical delivery with Poulin’s soaring vocal style. “There is courage involved in allowing someone into your life, in the acceptance of one’s own vulnerability in relationships. That combined with past failures, fears and shortcomings are the subject of Beware Of Me.” says Mofazzali. “Finding success in your failures and embracing the growth inherent in those, allowing others in, is the message.”
