Japanese born, London based space-folk artist Grimm Grimm has unveiled ‘Knowing’ (Church Version), which features the talents of acid psyche band Bo Ningen. The track is the b-side to forthcoming single ‘Hazy Eyes Maybe’, which is released on 7” via ATP Recordings on May 4th. Grimm Grimm, real name Koichi Yamanoha, will perform the track alongside Bo Ningen, at his single launch this Friday at ATP’s pop-up venue, formerly the Total Refreshment Centre in Stoke Newington.
Grimm Grimm recently unveiled details of his debut album, also titled Hazy Eyes Maybe, which is due for release on June 29th via ATP Recordings. The captivating, dream-like video for the albums title track can be viewed now on YouTube. The original version of ‘Knowing’ features on the album, however for the Church Version, Koichi wanted to create something completely unique. He says:
“I wanted this song to sound like a big iron tower. I’ve managed to make sounds like it for this original version for my album, but I still wanted to make an even heavier version, minimal yet almost death metal in sound. So I called Bo Ningen up and they all said yes.
We went to this church in Hampstead Heath and my friend Tim Garratt did the recordings. The neighbours kept banging on the door of the church for ages to stop us, but we couldn’t hear as the sound was so loud. It was great.”
Last year, Koichi caught the attention of My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, who released the debut single ‘Kazega Fuitara Sayonara / Tell The Truth’ via his label Pickpocket Records. Grimm Grimm’s stirring and intuitive live performances have seen him play alongside the likes of Wire, Dinosaur Jr, Damo Suzuki and Simon Finn, as well as collaborate with Serafina Steer and Le Volume Courbe.
2015 is set to be a pivotal year for Grimm Grimm as he continues to blur the boundaries of genre according to his own distinct outlook. Hazy Eyes Maybe is released June 29th and can be pre-ordered now via iTunes and on CD/LP via ATP.
