Ash Wednesday is a dark and powerful showcase of Benjamin’s distinctive guitar technique and vocals, incorporating elements of industrial electronica and alternative rock, but with an uplifting edge that speaks to the soul. The single is a testament to Benjamin’s skill as a songwriter and producer, and is an exciting introduction to his debut EP, due for release this Spring.
Benjamin has spent time in a number of different bands, spanning genres as diverse as jazz, indie and metal – elements of which can still be heard in his music. He was briefly taught by soulful songstress Laura Mvula and at the age of 17 was performing as a professional musician, drumming for Tru-Thoughts singer Lizzy Parks. He’s also supported acts such as Bonobo and Norman Jay, and played live on BBC 6 Music for Craig Charles.
After a year touring as a solo singer/songwriter, Benjamin found like minded musicians Terry Downs (bass guitar),Josh Fowley (drums, samples & percussion) and Hilda Sibeck (backing vocals). With these three on board, Benjamin’s clever, modern and stripped back sound was finally complete.
With a UK tour planned in March, a European tour in April and the aforementioned EP in the pipeline, Benjamin Yellowitz’ dark and soulful sound is sure to make a big impression on 2015.
