HEREFORD COLLEGE OF ARTS TO LAUNCH MUSIC DEGREE COURSE
Hereford College of Arts (HCA) will add to its current portfolio of arts-based degree courses by launching a BA (Hons) Popular Music course in October.
HCA was recently awarded the UK Quality Mark by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in recognition of the College’s standards and good practice at College Road Campus, home to the existing eleven Degree and two Masters courses, which are all validated by the University of Wales Trinity St David.
The College’s Extended Diploma in Music course – which is the equivalent of three A-Levels – is based at the Folly Lane Campus, where students have regular access to industry standard facilities and equipment. The course is incredibly popular; students travel from outside of the county to study Music at HCA, and the application process is tough.
The BA (Hons) Degree course offers several defined pathways for students who have ambitions to work as composers and producers, teachers, performers or in events or journalism.
In the past creative careers have often been misunderstood, however in recent years, the recession-busting creative industries have gone against the grain; employment has gone up year on year, with 1 in 12 UK roles now being a creative job. In 2013, creative roles generated £76.9bn to the UK economy. As the only specialist college in the Midlands dedicated to the Arts, HCA offers a hub of creativity to students from across the UK and beyond.
“Hereford offers a wealth of music opportunities,” says Pete Thorogood, Course Leader on the Extended Diploma in Music. “Recording studios, festivals, venues and community music development all tie in with a burgeoning live music scene and our staff are notable achievers in the industry, offering fantastic advice and guidance to our students. By extending our current offer to include Higher Education pathways, we will retain and attract talented and ambitious students who will develop their education and careers here in Hereford.”
Anyone interested in the Popular Music degree course is welcome to attend an Open Day at HCA’s College Road Campus on Wednesday 25th March, from 10:30am until 12:00pm. Visit hca.ac.uk or call (01432) 273359 for more information.
