The two components of bass and drums are bound together so tight on Of Ruin that they resemble a singular gnarled entity, kneading together groove and melody like putty in the palm of their hands, with explosive results. Intrinsically heavy and elastically supercharged, Ghold create a strain of viscous rock that is as plainly devastating as it is capricious, pushing down the scales in a myriad of manners to achieve an ever heavier outcome. The riffs of the bass approach a murky mysticism, likely to crumble in landslides of overblown fuzz, before snapping in to strict rigidity comparable to what Motörhead would sound like if you isolated the rhythm section. The wealth of ideas presented by Paul Antony and Aleks Wilson on Of Ruin surpass the imaginations of the majority, and it’s easy to see why Terrorizer tipped them as one to watch for 2015.
Album engineer Dan Miller recalls the process; “We basically locked our selves in the studio, slept on the floor, and just really pushed everything as far as we could. It was a real heady environment of manic creativity, where anything and everything was tried, and a lot of the more weird or offbeat ideas ended up really working. The result I think is something at times pretty heavy and mean, but also quite beautiful, warm, lush and completely original.“
The alchemic duo fuse elements of power violence, doom, gloom and heavy rock with enchanting vocal incantations. Since their inception in 2012, Ghold have been steadily amassing fans of their filthy jams, following their self-released, self-titled demo in 2012, an LP Cassette and CD release in 2013, and from countless shows performing alongside the likes of Stephen O’Malley, Yob, Pallbearer & Årabrot.
Of Ruin, mastered by James Plotkin, shall be available on CD and LP formats via Ritual Productions on 16th March, the band will officially launch their album on 20th March at the Black Heart in London.
“Ghold are not your bog standard NOLA worshipping sludge troupe. There may only be two of them, but on their debut full-length alone (‘Judas Ghoat’) these guys demonstrate more engaging ideas than many bands do over the course of their entire careers. The pair’s open minded approach to song writing deftly incorporates a whole host of eclectic influences, and somehow manages to sound incredibly fresh and exhilarating even when they’re ploughing into some of the most ponderous dirges you’ll hear this side of Corrupted. When they pick up the pace, their raucous, weirdly timed assaults sound a little bit like Lightning Bolt – well, how we imagine Lightning Bolt would sound if you locked them in a cellar for several months with nothing but a bucket of bovril and a copy of Melvin’s ‘Bullhead’ for sustenance, that is.”
