VVOMEN

FFO: Dads, Tiny Moving Parts, The Front Bottoms

VVomen is in the business of making “pretty music for ugly people.” The northern California quartet composed of members of various Sacramento music projects (At Dawn, Autumn Sky, OBR) began writing their unique mix of emo and punk in early 2013. After years of playing in different hardcore bands, bassist Paul Collier joined up with long time friend Allan Leri and ex bandmate Kyle Hanson to write material for a project almost completely detached from previous bands.

Influenced by bands like Thursday, mewithoutoyu, and AFI, they recorded their debut EP “Naked” in September of 2013. The 5 songs on “Naked” feature Kyle Kaylor’s dynamic vocal range that goes from mellow to a strained post-hardcore growl reminiscent of Snowing’s Johm Galm and Dylan Matthiessen of Tiny Moving Parts. Guitarist Hanson’s intricate, chiming riffs are a counter point to Kaylor’s dramatic delivery while Collier and Leri’s technical rhythm section provide powerful dynamics while keeping everything together.

BRAVE SEASON

FFO: Into It. Over It., The World is a Beautiful Place, Death Cab for Cutie, From Indian Lakes

There is a running joke among players in the Yuba City music scene that everyone and their brother has been in Brave Season. The band began in 2010 with Elmer Martinez and Haden Barrow as it’s core members and with a rotating cast of musicians, it has taken on many incarnations over the years. With the inclusion of multi-instrumentalist Luke Sanchez and long time fan Josh Ingram, the band was able to finally craft their own brand of “loud indie rock.” Brave Season’s charismatic persona makes every live show feel like a gathering of old friends. Brave Season will be releasing an EP entitled “A Year in Self Portraits”in the fall of 2014 and is currently writing a full length and playing up and down the west coast.
