VVomen is in the business of making “pretty music for ugly people.” The northern California quartet composed of members of various Sacramento music projects (At Dawn, Autumn Sky, OBR) began writing their unique mix of emo and punk in early 2013. After years of playing in different hardcore bands, bassist Paul Collier joined up with long time friend Allan Leri and ex bandmate Kyle Hanson to write material for a project almost completely detached from previous bands.
Influenced by bands like Thursday, mewithoutoyu, and AFI, they recorded their debut EP “Naked” in September of 2013. The 5 songs on “Naked” feature Kyle Kaylor’s dynamic vocal range that goes from mellow to a strained post-hardcore growl reminiscent of Snowing’s Johm Galm and Dylan Matthiessen of Tiny Moving Parts. Guitarist Hanson’s intricate, chiming riffs are a counter point to Kaylor’s dramatic delivery while Collier and Leri’s technical rhythm section provide powerful dynamics while keeping everything together.
